Newbie question. When I shoot in Vertical mode is there a way to avoid cropping when downloading? All my vertical shots are in landscaoe mode when downloaded and I then have to crop on iphone to be true vertical. Thanks

What do you mean? When I shoot vertical, I get a true portrait photo. Not crop. Can you show an example?

That is portrait mode.
"True vertical mode" is when the camera points straight down beneath the drone.

Where is the cropping?

That is a vertical/portrait picture (ie true vertical) displayed on a horizontal/landscape screen.

There are black bars because the image is true vertical... What did you expect to see?

Turn your phone vertical and view a vertical image (like the one in your screenshot) and there will be no vertical bars because vertical images are intented to be viewed on a vertical screen - that is the point of the true vertical camera rotation.

I expected to see no bars when posting to Instagram. I have to crop it before it becomes a “true vertical” video format unfortunately

Here you can see what I am talking about. If I want it to be proper vertical (portrait mode) then I must crop…

Just to confirm are you rotating the camera on the Mini 3 and then copying the images from the SD card in the drone to your device,  not via quick transfer etc.

When you rotate the camera on the drone does the screen update to show its now vertical,  ie you see the spin.

What resolution are your vertical images and what resolution are your horizontal images?

In this second screen shot you have black all around the image, in your previous screenshot you only have black at the sides. This implies that the black is not part of the image and therefore cannot be dropped of the image. The black areas are just because the image has a lower resolution that the display you are viewing it on. The extra screen space either needs to be filled with something (in this case black) as there is not enough image to fill the screen, or you need to zoom in - in which case on a horizontal monitor you will still have black at the sides because a vertical picture, by definition, cannot fill a horizontal monitor.

Thx for the reply. First photo was simply from camera roll. Second photo was an instagram video which should automatically format to portrait mode but it doesn;t

But what are the resolutions?

Another thing to try .. insert the original image from the drone into your usual text document editor (Word or whatever you use on the Mac)... Does the image still have black bars at the sides?

And the resolution of a vertical image and of a horizontal image immediately after copying from the drone?

3840 × 2160 And 1214 × 2160

Well the first is a full resolution 4K horizontal/landscape image

The second is definitely vertical/portrait, so should but have black at the sides, but it is an odd resolution. The resolution should simply be the width and height of the landscape image swapped over I.e. it should be 2160x3480.

That implies that the second image has been processed by something else rather than being direct from the drone.

How are you transferring them off the drone?

Thx for the help. I am transferring directly from SD card. Also strange that I shoot in 4K 30fps and when downloaded it’s only 25fps (screenshot below)
