EL GALEON ANDALUCA
Today was supposed to be the last day that the replica pirate ship was in port,  so it seemed rude not to take a walk out on the pier and grab some shots.    And I took the view it was better to seek forgiveness than permission.

17th Century Spanish Galleon Replica. During a period longer than three centuries (16th to 18th), Galleons were the boats that took the lead role in the trade and cultural routes named the Indies fl¬eets. These were the longest routes in length and also lasted longer than any other in navigation history.
El Galeon was built during 2009 to 2010 by the Nao Victoria Foundation. Designed and developed by Ignacio Fernández Vial at the Punta Umbria shipyard (Huelva, Spain), the boat was launched on November 30th, 2009 and then the masts were added at the beginning of 2010. El Galeon has covered more than 48,000 nautical miles between 2010 to 2016 along the world’s largest seas and oceans, visiting ports in four continents and participating in many cultural projects. El Galeon has sailed across the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Southern China Sea, the Aegean Sea, the Bosporus Strait and the Caribbean Sea. So far, visitors have been able to step on her decks in almost hundred ports all over the world.

Fantastic shots of the old replica galleon.    I'd love see her underway with all her sails catching the wind.

Fantastic shots of the old replica galleon.    I'd love see her underway with all her sails catching the wind.

I was disappointed this morning with the weather,  it had been so nice at the castle and really clouded up by the time I got to the end of the pier.   SHMBOd wasnt too happy as I made her get up at 6am so that she could drop me and go and loiter with the car.

Not my shot,  but this is her underway.   (I may keep an eye on the schedule and see if I can try and capture something like this,  but my guess is she motors mostly.  )

Now that's what I'm talking about.  Nothing is more impressive than a set of sails full of wind.

Yeah, I'm guessing they motor until they are quite a ways out.

I wountnt be surprised if they were just used for decorative purposes as it must be a huge faff to put them up and take them down.

Yes,  it's a Spanish replica and you even have to pay on euros for the tour.

There's a shot about (not mine) with the sails out.   My guess is they are decorative and they motor that from attraction site as it must be a hugh faff to set sails.

Yes I saw that shot too. It would take a sizeable crew to rig it for sea, I guess.

I wountnt be surprised if they were just used for decorative purposes as it must be a huge faff to put them up and take them down.

The US Coast Guard has the Barque Eagle (formerly Horst Wessel) and is used to train cadets and officer candidates.  They power under sail 90% of the underway time.

She has a permanent crew of seven officers and 50 enlisted members.  During training missions, she takes on a variety of temporary crew and sails with an average complement of 12 officers, 68 crew, and up to 150 trainees.  So there are plenty of crew to raise and lower the sails as needed.

While onboard hey take classes on numerous subjects that are key to life at sea, including navigation, seamanship, ship and boat maneuvering, line handling, sailing, first aid, weather patterns, damage control, engineering, and career development

The most challenging task for the trainees is to navigate between ports using sextants, a compass, and the tools of celestial navigation.  During this time the GPS receivers onboard are covered up so only the permanent officers onboard have access to them.

There was no sign of any crew when I was there,   If I manage to get back Id like to go as its leaving just incase some sails go up,  but I suspect that could be a lot of waiting around.

I think we have something similar here,   although I think yours is probably more strict.  There is also the youth training on tall ships - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_Ships_Youth_Trust
