Hey all, I am new to FPV and have been trying to figure out how to setup FPV on an airplane.  I have bought DJI googles V2, 03 air unit, Motionsic gimble and head tracker.  I do not want a flight controller but would rather power my air unit directly into its own dedicated battery.  My question is "How?"  Can anyone help or suggestions?  I would like to plug directly into a 3S.  Thank you ahead for your time and consideration.

You can power an 03 directly from a 3s battery.  Via its 6 pin cable.  However, I have no idea how it will function without the FC.

Thank you! I have spoken with two others that have the DJI air unit and they cut their ribbon cable and left the ground and power wires and soldered a JST onto it. I have purchased and extra cable plus and extended one plus a Speedy bee wing FC. I may just for now use the FC as a power source.

Hey Chris, did that work for you ? I'm kinda trying to do the same. Could you tell me what's the other cable you used ?

Yes, it worked! First I bought a replacement just in case. Since I’m not using a flight controller I cut all the wires not needed except power and ground. I did find a wire guide and confirmed black and red was all I needed. I soldered on a jst to the end and purchased a on/off switch and placed between the battery  and air unit. The 03 can take up to 6c battery but I’m using a 2c. I put on the Motionsic BAG and their head tracker. I had problems with my NX8 and had to send it in before I finished the complete setup but the camera worked and was bound to my googles v2. I also found this on Amazon which dogfightFPV.com is using

Hello to all, I'm trying to find out he way of connecting the o3 Unit directly to the batter. My concern with this last post is that I have read that the unit will not give the 100% Power or potential without the TX and Rx cables connected to a FC.

What I ended up doing is cutting the wires not needed and left the black and red and placed a JST connector on the one end.  I then plugged the JST into a on/off switch then into a 3S battery.  I now have at least 30 flights with no problem.  In my goggles i program full power so that I can record.  Here is my last video of me flying and you can see I am flying pretty far away from the field and have no problems.

Hello Chris , et all ,

Im following your post with great interest , i also am new to FPV flying and am currently looking at buying an air unit 03 , to mount on a gimble  ( not motion sic as too hard to get here in uk ) to mount on my 60" scratch build swordfish ,.

Im running a Wind box hotas TX /RX which has 3 pin outputs so i have been curious to  see how others have powered the unit , but of course the air unit is simply transmiting the signal  ( gimbles are contolled by RXtx on the contoller ) so the air unit being seperatly powered make sense.

What connectors did you use and any pics of your wiring ?

Hello Navy Biker, I am currently out of town but when I get back I will take a picture. I cut the 3in1 wire leaving only the black and red wires and soldered a JST connector to the end. That then plugs into a on/off switch and then into a 3c battery. Funny you talk about Motionsic as I am currently in California 45 minutes away from Robert’s field he flies at. I linked up with him last weekend and picked his brain and watched him fly. Four guys were flying formation and it was cool to watch. He was testing a new 3 axis gimble that I got to try out. He may be offering that at a later date.

SOunds likel you have a good inside line with them chris , Wahts the 3rd axis ? is it a slide side ways , may help on my swordfish as all the rigging obscures the pilot view a bit ,

Keep me posted , no rush , now you've said i can picture how youve done it ,  if i can rais ethe money ill commit to a unit and think illl run as a stand alone battery to the Power for TX and motor.

im thinking ill remove screen for the FPV camera and make a thin wire outline to maintain the look , but the diagonal braces directly in front are structural on the the upper wing

I removed the plastic windows and left the frame to simulate it’s still there. The swordfish will be a cool FPV platform. The 3rd axis is head tilt that he is working on. Adding that to the gimbal does take up more space.

AH , head tilt , that makes sense yes,  Well if your passing again and find out they want an international Guinee pig for testing , id happily volunteer the swordfish , or even my  sea vixen

If you have facebook, “FPV air combat” is a site that Robert is the admin. I ask lots of questions there. Is your swordfish gas engine? I have recently been asking questions about making my 1/4 scale Hemple L4 FPV.
