If this is normal, how does the FC recognize a failsafe condition?

It's normal, FC can recognize this condition.

Just verify that the assistant shows lost RC and that LED shows FS pattern.

You will be fine

I've triggered unintentionally failsafe on mine by flying out beyond signal range but it did come back perfectly fine on its own.

The Lightbridge ground unit started picking up video and RC again when each came back into range.

Triggered ATTI mode to regain manual control once in range again.

No problems.
