Hello all.

I searched through the user manual and found nothing on (focus) topics Im about to talk about today.  If posible can you confirm whats the official word from DJI on how the Mini 3 pro focus works, and should be used.

1: Is there a limit in distance as to how close AF works untill I have to manualy tap on screen to focus on closer subjects? I have picked up hints here n there that AF works within a 1m distance from the subject, should I conclude that anything closer I would be expected to either use MF or tap on screen when in this close proximity?  Tests show that it will not AF on my face when close, even further that 3 meters, I have to tap on screen.

2: Does the AF set is range prior to flying and not try again to refocus once in flight by itself, this is more of a myth put out there that needs to be cleared up?  There is a common consensus on forum threads and even videos on TY that you should tap the screen in case prior to flying it forcused in a closer subject and will no focus correct once in flight?

3:  While the drone on lauch pad, there may have a large pebble holding down the launch pad, would, should this mess up the focus once in flight.  Yesteday it went from clear to blured  once in flight so in reverse and remained that way so footage of no use.  I did not tap the screen as it looked fine on the RC controler.

So myths aside, what should it fuction like and what should the user be expected to do.  Assuming the lense is clean, any filters used are clean its down to he enviroment, drone and controler with the correct usage of it.

Limited range for AF need Semi AF for closer subjects.

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out. The focus range for DJI Mini 3 Pro is 1 m to ∞ anything closer try using MF instead of AF. Compared with AF-S, AF-C can actually focus and frame a larger area, so the background may also be focused, while AF-S allows users to tap and select the target, and thus delivers better focus accuracy. For better focus you can also Tap on the screen to enable focus or spot metering. Focus or spot metering will display differently depending on the focus mode, exposure mode, and spot metering mode. After using spot metering, tap and hold on the screen to lock the exposure. To unlock the exposure, tap and hold on the screen again. Tap the AF/MF icon on (Focus button) to switch the focus mode. Tap and hold the icon to expand the focus bar and slide on the bar to focus the camera. If you would like to know more about Aircraft camera focus you may view here Aircraft Camera Out of Focus

I hope this information has helped to clarify your inquiries. If you have any other questions, kindly let us know. Thank You!

Thank you for this clear explanation.  There are some things there I didnt know, such as it using spot metering by touching screen.

Thank you.

I have PM you with enquiries about auto focus in trying to understand what would cause footage to either not update its AF when its not locked in place resulting in footage that is not usable.

I see this is a common thread of concern, and although I have just changed the Ribbon cable to the gimbal I dont know if this is related to the small crash or updated firmware as I had done firmware at the same time.  I also did have the odd time before the crash as other threads have highlighted where the camera just find it hard to focus and remain there.

On the 5th Aug I went to fly the drone and on the RC it looked fine, on the actual footage it was of no use as it was blured for about 80% of the footage.  On that day it was in focus for a moment in flight then went out of focus and remained there.

05 Aug 2024

On the 6ths I had flown in around front room and it showed to focus fairly well.

06 Aug 2024

On 6th Aug in the evening I went out and got some really nice footage, or so I thought, it was blured.  I have not uploaded this footage yet, the camera still footage was not bad at all.

I then decided that night to reset the camera settings in the RC after doing a firmware refresh again.  I had already as I had already  done refresh, cleaned lens of both camera and filter days before.

I went down beach again and the footage was realy good.  I did have to press the focus button allot, and from memory  the past use when I focused on me close up and then had pointed camera to a further away object or scene in distance it did auto focus, its not doing this now.

07 Aug 2024

So since I deleted RC camera settings and did another refresh its much better than days before, so is the way its responding now considered normal?
