I use Google Maps often for planning flights and driving trips, but detest that annoying search box in the upper left corner of the screen that keeps expanding and contracting depending on my search actions. I found a solution on the 'net that solves the problem by toggling on/off that search box with one click on my Windows PC and Linux laptop (I use Firefox browser on both). Go to this pageand drag the “Toggle Google Maps” thing to your browser's bookmarks tool bar ( I suppose it'll work in Internet Explorer too?). Now when you're on a map all you have to do is click it and the search box disappears---click it again and it reappears. Google Maps no longer makes me crazy.
