Did a quick test with HLG vs Color, so think I know which I want to use.

Put camera with Auto ISO, so now we can see how it kinda work. Shutterspeed the same on both.

Oh blimey. Were you processing in hdr colour space? Or HDR mode?

When I looked at my footage on an HDR TV, it was brilliant and triggered the correct settings on my TV. No editing or rendering, straight from camera file.

No this is straight out of camera. I could not recover any highlights of HLG clip.
I probably need to import in HLG (HDR) color with Davinci Resolve if it will change anything.
But so different ISO was strange.

HLG has a different gamma curve; especially at the top end so maybe the difference is something to do with the way that the top end will be interpreted on an HDR screen.

Honestly, when I played my files direct on my TV they looked pretty amazing and full bodied.

HLG is supposed to be backwards compatible so it ‘should ‘ translate to a normal picture on here. It looks like something is wrong compared to what I saw on my TV.

With the shutter being the same but the ISO dropping with the HLG, it's quite funny that it's significantly brighter and washed out in colour. The high's would be closer together with HLG because that's where the gamma does a stronger curve.

Quick edit when import color is HLG and HDR, big difference and now highlights is not clipped.

Thanks Ian to actually remind me about it

Ah…. Thank goodness for that. That’s much better. HLG should look ‘normal’ when looked at on a non HDR screen since the extra picture adjustments are ignored, but on an HDR screen it takes off big time!

Since I'm actually still a noobie regarding video coloring, I didn't think about the gamut while importing the clip. But now I know and since you commented about it I remembered to import with different color scheme and Davinci Resolve have a wide varity of different to choose. So I did choose HLG with 2.4 gamma.

Now I will have to do a lot of theese experiments in the future to see what will work best.

Try 2.2 gamma as well. Sometimes just a little lift in the middle makes it more pleasant.

HDR might be a 'rocky road' for some because quite a lot of editors don't do HDR.

Now a quick edit with gamma 2.2 to see. Turned down colors a bit also.

That looks the other way. Slightly darker. Is it 2.6 on way in? The Mids should lift a little bit. I prefer the first one at 2.4 but maybe on the input you have to go the other way?

That’s a difficult shot too with the bright sky and dark trees.

I probably edited it a bit too dark compared to the other one.

Actually when imported as gamma 2.4 it was too bright, and too dark with gamma 2.2. But didn't find the same HLG gamma input for 2.2 that I did with 2.4.

Oh ok. I quite like the 2.4 version. The sky might be able to go up without blowing out or very slightly tweak contrast?just to give it a bit more sparkle.  As I said, it’s a difficult shot actually.

I also like the 2.4 best, it gives most HDR look, and yes it was actually not really daylight outside so dark shadow with bright sky making it really work with the brightness and shadow in the dynamic range.

I know. But after Ian talked about this, I went and learned how to color HLG footage in Davinci Resolve. It was a bit tricker than I first thought.

Ah ok, so far I never worked with HLG, so I'll have to look that up once I try it out.
I'm curious if it gives much advantage.

From my tests, it do gives a big advantage compared to ordinary color.
But I can't still confirm it.
