I wonder wether we will ever see from DJI (or third party) a higher capacity battery for the inspire then the TB48 model currently available, with for example 20 minutes flights with the X5 gimble. I think this will be greatly appreciated by a lot of users.
I realize the difficulty to make it fit in the currenty available space/housing but I am sure there is ways..
any comments ??

Unlikely anything official.  The phantom had a aftermarket kit that let you use two batteries at once, haven't seen anything like that for the inspire yet though.

Could be too much weight of x5 and 2 batteries at the same time for inspire's motors and props. The reconstruction  of the whole model needs to be done then

Tim,

Could they come out with a taller pack that would increase the capacity by 25% and get the additional flight time but not to much weight gain? The top section of the battery could be bubbled to maintain air flow. This way no modifications would be necessary to the Inspire 1

I am hoping for the next battery chemistry to come out soon and be lighter with more energy.....  I know they are working on it right now.

Yes, new chemistry combination could be a solution, but perhaps the full volume (density) of the present plastic battery housing has not been utilised, and yes a slightly taller battery could probably add a 25% capacity which I guess we would all be happy about. the extra weight added would be very limited, I think.

The inspire can carry quite a bit more weight, there's a few videos on YouTube of people testing it's lifting capacity, forget what the high score was though.

I found some images of disassembled inspire batteries on the web..which I will try to enclose or post . as you can see the top section is completely empty except for the electronic board and on off switch, which perhaps could be accommodated on the sides if one were to produce a taller battery, to use all vertical space for extra LI-ION cells.
I agree with Paul , the inspire would have no issue to carry this little extra weight.

thanks for the video and your thoughts. So if we wanted have a TB 49 (with same extra capacity as between the TB47 and TB48) presumably it would add an extra 80-100 grams of weight , taking into account also a bit of extra plastic in case it is taller. I think the inspire can leave with it, without any major issues and also the CoG would not be really altered! Do you agree ? If a TB 49 would become available how many of you would go for it ?

Not me, the tb 48 only gives me 2-3 min more flight time than atb 47 and costs $50 more.  For the same amount of money spent you can one more battery if you go tb47 and gain a few more minutes flight time overall, you just have to swap batteries a couple minutes sooner.

Yeah there are British boffins also working on the Graphine batteries, which could provide exceptionally wafer like batteries and if they replaced the current cells it would provide very long flight times.  However as with new technology I would guess they would command a high price

Thanks Jeffcrae52.
I sent them an email with a few questions. Lets wait and see. It appears they are connecting 2 x 2200 amp extra batteries in parallel to the main one , providing additional total 4400 amps which come (in case of a TB48) to a total of 10100 amps! that should (even taking into account the extra weight carried around) increase flight time considerably !
I do wonder however what kind of reading you get in the Go app when checking the battery ! Obviously overall battery discharge will be much slower,so that forecasted remaining flight time will be inaccurate.
Anyone thinks the parallel connection can bring any issues on the main original battery ?

Extra battery = extra weight = extra motor load

You probably end up with no significant increase in flight time.
Currently
25 % more battery capacity only get you 10% more flight time (TB47->TB48)
Probably less efficient as it get heavier.( May be the new motor on the I1 Pro will; be better?)

Well only way to know for sure it to try it out.
Have also in the meantime checked the horizon FPV website and what they offer. waiting to hear from them also.
Jeffmacrae52 , your starting sequence suggestion makes sense. Not sure however about switching off. You mean first disconnect the additional batteries  and then switch off the main original DJI one ?

I am also experimenting with this mod but did not test it now.

My first concern was the C-rate. While most seem to use 25-35C additional batteries I wonder if this is enough. Maybe someone could bringt some light into it. Its said the TB48 is used first and then the additional batteries. Ok lets look

TB48 has 5400 mAh and saidto be 15C - thats still enough for 80 Ampere
but the smaller batteries have 1300 mAh with 35C its only 45 Ampere

The Inspire ESCs are made for up to 20 ampere = 4x20 = 80
It was tested that the Inspire under certain conditions actually uses ~53 Ampere.

Will a 1300mAh with 25C or 35C be safe?

I really dont know, I bought 1550 mAh 65C for first test thinking to go back to 1300 mAh with lower C if necessary for weight or possible with C-rate.

I use 3M industrial Dual Lock to fix the batteries this saves 80g weight plastics

http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/med ... 2-sj3870-sj3871.pdf

I expect a total takeoff weight of 3500g.

Hi Machoman, thanks for sharing.
would be very interesting to hear you findings as well as seeing some pictures of how you have fitted the extra batteries on the inspire.
I don't have unfortunately enough knowledge about C value (I think it is the max burst output power) of batteries to comment on what you wrote, but always eager to learn.
