Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I couldn't figure out where else. So I'm planning to purchase iMac to edit videos with Final Cut Pro. Since there are several versions offered by Apple with different specs and sizes I have no idea which iMac with what specs will do the job. If here is anybody that could help a little, I'll be very happy.

I just bought myself an iMac last month for the same reason
my spec is this:
27inch 5K retina display
3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor
Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB (two 4GB) memory, configurable up to 32GB
1TB hard drive (7200rpm option) (I use a couple of 3Tb USB 3 drives for extra storage etc.)
AMD Radeon R9 M380 with 2GB video memory
Retina 5K 5120x2880 P3 display
Also has:
x4 USB 3.0 ports
x2 Thunderbolt ports
1x SDXC card slot
1x 10/10/1000 ethernet
Blue tooth

Handles 4k files in FC Pro with ease and is plenty fast enough for my use, you may want to also consider upgrading the drive to Apple's fusion drive for added read/write speed, and also the amount of RAM however Apple charge an arm and a leg for their memory so it can be much cheaper to buy extra memory elsewhere and install it yourself.
I had a set budget for my iMac and am more than happy with it's capabilities, pretty impressed with it all round.
Oh and in case you did not know Imovie (which is included in OSX) now also handles 4K

Hope this helps
Bryn.

I'm using a Mid-2011 27" iMac i5 Quad with 16GB ram and it edits P3A 2.7K footage with ease... Quite surprised really as I expected I'd probably need to upgrade this year...

Bryn's covered off most of the other things to consider - get RAM elsewhere and fit your self, mine cost around £80. Also you'll need lots of storage for all your raw video footage. I've got a 6TB RAID and it's almost full!

I also have a 2011 mac and have updraded the ram myself - I did hear someone say though that ram is soldered on now on new products so your only option is to present your arm and leg and get the upgrade at time of purchase - I may well have dreamt this so please check

27" 5K, right? That's a nice setup. I've got a pretty good 2012 27", but that was before the era of retina iMacs
