Hey, thanks again everyone for the overwhelmingly positive response. I'll try to answer a few questions in one go.
We almost always shoot with a pilot and a camera operator, allowing for more dynamic camera movements. The camera operator is also able to identify things that are visually interesting and communicate them in real time to the pilot, as the pilot is basically only looking at the craft while the operator is concentrating on the image. We shoot 4K mp4s. If your computer has the editing power, it's not a bad idea to shoot 4K even if you are finishing at 1080.
We generally shoot 23.98, but if the weather is choppy we sometimes go to 29.97 and conform to 23.98 later, smoothing the shots out a little bit by shooting slightly slow-motion. We edit in premiere and never transcode to ProRes. It's just not necessary for another codec to be involved unless you are editing in an old system like FCP7. |
