Well, this maybe a dumb question....

So, I've been consistenly noting the following....

When shooting video in:
1080P 30fps ---no problem when I play this on my computer
1080P 60fps --- the picture "jumps" during playback
4K video ---- I keep getting a blue screen of death on my computer

Is this something to do with my computer? video graphic card?

4K is very new to me, and really I don't know much about the different fps setting and its impact either on playing on a regular PC

Well, i know I'm learning something new every day.

Thanks

Just to clarify, your OSMO unit and your tablet and/or smart phone are fine correct? Its just when you want to playback 4K videos on your PC?

Please try to upgrade your Osmo to the latest version v1.4.1.80 (2015/12/27) . Blue screen problem has already been solved in the new firmware. About the jump of 1080P60 fps. What is your camera setting? Please try to upload the original files in the micro SD card of Osmo to Dropbox or MEGA and provide the download link here.

PotPlayer is the new king of video players on PC. Better than VLC in many ways.

Media Player Classic is the Windows king IMO. No installation required unless you want it. Just grab the zip version, and run it anywhere. The keyboard shortcuts are ridiculously useful and the minimal interface lets you tuck a video away in the corner of your screen while you work.

Yes, yes,

What I described all happened on my computer, that is, after I download the video contents from the SD card.

Thanks all!

I've been playing with both VLC Media Player and the DAUM Pot Player, both work, now I can tell that 1080P 60fps is really really smooth (compared with "jumping" before with another video player).

However, 4K video still kinda "jumps" on my PC screen.

So, my ultimate/dumb question: do I need to have a 4K monitor and its associated video hardware/video card to play 4K video?!

The video should be downsized by the player to suit your monitor, so you're good on that front. Your PC's internal hardware is the bottleneck. 4K video is quite resource intensive. Modern graphic cards help the CPU by using a dedicated decoder. If that's not there, the CPU does all the work. If the CPU isn't all that great, then you'll be struggling. Think of a mom cleaning up after a raging keg party by herself, vs with the help of a skilled maid.

100% your computer does not have enough processing power to play 4k videos. I updated my Macbook to 16gb of RAM and a 500gb SSD and it still stutters in 4k.

If you want to see native 4K resolution, you need a 4K display. That should be obvious.

Otherwise your computer will scale the 4K video down to 1080. This may result in jumping or stuttering depending on your PC hardware specs including RAM, video card, video player software, drivers.

If you download Pot Player, don't forget to also download their optional codecs when you install Pot Player. You must install the codecs offered during installation.
