Per the FAA's new B4UFLY app:

Legally, you would have to contact every small airport/heliport before you fly, which could be a daunting task.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/video/features/are-quadcopters-legal%3F
"a good rule of thumb is to assume that all airspace within five miles of an airport, starting at sea level, is controlled, and that operating UAVs without explicit FAA approval is prohibited. This means that it's effectively illegal to operate a UAV almost anywhere in what one might consider metro New York City, because there are three major airports, including Newark."

Plus NY has a lot of major highways, which are often designated as heliports.

I'm in NJ, which is essentially a no-fly state now because of the FAA rules. Sucks big time.

Why NJ is a no fly state? because of too many airports?

That was my opinion. I live in Central Jersey. The app lists 10 heliports within 5 miles of my house. I would legally have to contact all of them before I fly. I'm also neat the NJ Turnpike, which along with the GSP is considered a heliport for its entire length. The entire state is full of airports and heliports (businesses, schools, hospitals, etc).

Look at this map of NJ: each dot is an airport or heliport. Draw a 5-mile circle around each dot and there's nothing left.

Do what I do... Don't register and go fly.. Just don't be an idiot, and do something stupid.

Well, I already registered, but I'm still going to fly in my yard (shhh!).

Don't be a moron like some people and not register as it is NOT worth the risk especially in such corrupted states like NY and NJ. If you get caught or questions they will hang you!

State parks are legal, unless posted, Federal parks are illegal, because they are posted.

stupid people have smashed into national monuments, animals, and other stuff. Now you can get a permit to fly in a national park, so check the rules.
