I am using the phantom 3 for aerial surveying and I am using some basic trig to calculate the area captured by the phantom 3. The problem is that the actual area captured does not seem to match up with the given specs of the camera. The manual says that the camera field of view is 94 degrees but the exiv information states that it is 84 degrees. Has anyone else looked into this to see what area should be captured in a single vertical image?

I can't find anything in the Exif data to show the field of view.
Not sure where you're finding that.
The FoV for the P3 lens is 94° (diagonally)
No-one can say what area is captured unless they know the height.

Thanks Labroides and Nigelw for getting back to me.  I used exiftool in linux as that gives me the most meta information including the field of view. The diagonal FOV makes more sense so I will try and plug these into my equations this evening and see if it matches with reality. I am doing my calculations on a vertical image taken from 100 meters above the ground.

So I just did some back of the envelope calculations and a diagonal FOV of 94 degrees with an aspect ratio of 4:3 works out at 81 degrees horizontal and 65.4 degrees vertical (not that I doubted you NigelW, I just wanted to double check!).  The horizontal distance I measured in my image taken from 100 metres was approx 168 meters which more closely matches up with my calculation of 171 meters for the horizontal and 128.4 for the vertical. The total area captured from 100 meters height is 21956 square meters or approx 2.2 hectares. Thanks again for your help guys!

No worries.

I did it on CAD but rounded the numbers, the calculator linked to above comes up with 81.7 x 66 degrees.

Actual physical tests are always best though, not least because of lens distortion & other tolerances

Not a techie here,just trying to find the right camera for my Phantom 3 Pro drone. Mine crashed and camera broke and purchased one off of eBay and am having image transmission problems and looked on eBay and fellow has camera like mine but said it was not for the Pro drone. My lense says gov 94×28 something or another and his also. Can anybody tell me how I can I'd camera without to much hassle? Thanks guys & hope I'm not a problem in posting this here. jonathanbryn,look at the Dimensionatal Field of View calculator in the link above and with a 22mm lens with a 94º field of view, at 100 feet up the area covered will be approx 102ft X 68ft and just change the "distance to subject" as you change height.
