After reading of all the troubles and restrictions, I thought I would check and see if there is any compelling reason to upgrade firmware.  I'm running 1.4.10+ and 1.4.30+ on the RC.  It looks like I mostly get better cold weather support from the batteries.  Am I missing something?

My opinion only! If your bird is flying properly and you're not have issues, I would stay where you are until they get these latest issues sorted out. If you're using DJI Go as your flight app, do not let it update to anything beyond v2.4.3. Again, my opinion only!
