I just finished up a rather long story review of the hard shell pack that's sold under DJI and other generic brands. Overall, it's a win for me, and i climbed a mountain with it.
I did some modifications to make an 8.4" tablet work, and rigged some lines on the outside to hold a jacket and some nicknacks.

Nice review, my (not official DJI) one arrived yesterday, how are you finding the straps? Mine are really small and seem suited for a child, I have to have them extended fully to get over my shoulders.

It highlights the biggest problem I have.  You can't take much else with you with any of these backpacks.  I wish someone would make one with a good adjustable harness & room for food, drinks & waterproofs etc.  I've had to make my own protection for my P3 that fits into an ordinary (large) backpack.  It's made from insulation meant for walls in buildings.

I saw one linked in these forums that had room for DSLR and a couple lens on top, it was a big bag though. I went with this one, as I was looking for smallest practical bag for thre phantom.

Unfortunately at this time of year, I need to carry loads of stuff & keep it all dry.  Even without a drone I usually fill a good sized daypack to bursting point.  A DSLR & a couple of lenses would be about the size of my down jacket when it's compressed in its compression bag.
I have the same issue with camera bags, so not likely to see anything for drones in the near future.

I found a really good bag for DSLR gear with lots of extra stuff, called the Lowepro Rover Pro 45L, if you pack light it can stretch to an overnight bag.

For you, I think finding an hiking bag big enough to take an insert that will fit an phantom, I've seen a couple phantom back packs that the padded insert bit can come out separate form the bag, then slide this into an hiking pack.

That's actually a really good idea...my phantom backpack can be bought for around £16 or less on eBay from China.  It would probably be worth getting one & trimming the foam down to fit.

This dilemma also speaks volumes of my desire for a more pack-able/modular/dismatleable drone. I also have the Xiro, which has a removable gimbal, and the legs fold in, but not completely flat.  I think plexidrone had a good idea with snap on/off arms.

I'm hoping that now that the FAA has deemed anything under .55lbs not serious, that we see a boom in higher quality sub .55lb drones with gimbals and good cameras.

Bag found & it all fits perfectly, including waterproofs, down jacket, crampons, ice axe, food & drink etc.  It's also more comfortable to carry than my previous North Face pack.  For anyone interested, it's a Vango Freedom 80+20

Thx. Ordered.

Have also been looking at Manfrotto ProLight MB BP-D1, but seems to be lacking space for extra clothes, food etc so I like this solution better
