Direct sunlight shouldn't damage the sensor.  Just think of all the security cameras that are in direct sunlight for a portion of their day, every day.

Unless there is a good infra-red filter fitted, it does have the potential to damage the sensor. Consider a very small focussed image of the sun projected onto the surface of the sensor. Localised heating can be severe.
