Shot some video yesterday and attempted to play back with VLC. Experiencd terrible choppiness and some pixalting.
But the video played back flawlessly using Windows Media Player.
Should I re-install VLC, erase and re-format the SD card... thoughts?
And there's nothing on the video card that is compelling enough to save.

Surprising as its usually the other way around.  Try coping the file to the hard drive and then play it back.  Choppy video is usually a data flow issue.

Check and make sure you don't have any video processing turned on in the settings.  I had the issue using media player classic.  I had denoise filter turned on and got choppy video.  Turned it of and was all good.

I have been using GOM PLayer for a few years now and it seems to take everything and its free as well.

VLC may be trying to run it at full resolution.., and yr PC cannot handle it.
Media player may dumb it down to 1080. My iPad Air plays 4K vid, but at 1080 res.

It's weird though that this is the first time I've had the problem playing directly from the SD card...

Install the correct codecs.
I use The Combined Community Codec Pack

I actually had the same experience when trying to playback videos higher then 1080p on a 1080 screen, possibly WMP has better downscaling althograms? The files were also quite high bitrate.

When I open in VLC, I can see how much more detailed the image is, than WMP.
That's what made me think it's just dumbing it down like iPad Air 2.

Could very well be, I couldn't really compare as VLC would only play the first 3-4 frames and then freeze
