The manual shows that the maximum weight payload for the Inspire1 = 3400g.
So i can attach an extra weight of more than 3kg and it still will fly ?

No the maximum weight including the weight of the aircraft, and Inspire1 weigh in at 2935g in total.

Ohh, then its wrong info in the manual. Definition of 'Payload' does not include the weight of the vehicle, does it ??

400g payload in addition.

That 3400 g max gross takeoff weight is probably more significant than most folks think.

The current configuration is an empty weight of ~2713g + 222 g payload (camera & gimbal - I just weighed it) = 2935 g takeoff weight.

That means actual payload is ~687 grams (~1.5 lb), more than 3 times the weight of the original camera & gimbal, opening up vast possibilities for not only improved photo/video assemblies, but other mounts as well.

The curren ...

Is 2713 g the weight including battery (I assume TB47) or w/o battery?

DJI-Manual should change specs  'max gross weight 3400g' and not 'max payload 3400g'.  Misleading in the DJI Inspire manual ?

I performed a payload test on the Inspire 1 today to determine the impact on flight time.

Adding about 1kg reduces the theoretical flight time of a 4500mA battery from 17 minutes down to 11 minutes. I calculated the normal discharge rate at 4.5mA/s and the discharge rate with a 1kg payload at 7mA/s. I arrived at these values by taking off, holding an altitude of about 10 feet, then landing after 3 minutes.

Interesting and confusing ...

You never know when you have that unusual situation that requires you to fly something to some one with your bird ... so I am very curious about the real maximum payload and flight time !

The E800 motors in the Inspire have a maximum thrust of 1600 grams each using 6s batteries and the 13 inch props.  So that would be 6400 grams of total lift.  The recommended lift is 800 grams per motor or 3200 grams total.  I have the same motors on another copter and lift more weight than the Inspire with no issues. I use 5200mah batteries and lift about 3600 grams for flights lasting around 18 minutes. (Still photography with an APS mirrorless camera.)  A larger and heavier 6000 mah battery gets more time.  If you plan to fly nearer the maximum thrust of the motors you have to realize that you are discharging the battery much faster. So that may or may not be an issue with the Inspire's battery... I don't know its discharge C rating.

I had a smaller copter that I flew right at the maximum motor thrust and it clearly over-stressed the batteries and was almost un-flyable at times.  The batteries were hot and puffed up. I would not have been surprised if it would fail in flight as the batteries may not have been able to keep up with the demand for power.  Ones with more capacity and a higher C rating may have worked somewhat better. But I was pushing the limit of the system.

Dundee,

I looked at the Max Tak-Off Mass (MTOM) when submitting my Ops Manual to the CAA in UK and I simply added the extra weight of a TB48 then added an approximate weight to cover any new camera variations, or additional items that may be released in the future.  I have a 3.25kg total MTOM, which allows some tolerance for any new cameras and I reckon this is still within the capabilities of the Inspire's lift.

Lifting is all very well. Just be careful coming back down...
