Some people say music is even more important than the footage. You can either completely destroy the mood of your video or bind the viewer to it on an emotional level. If you dont have the money to afford a composer one is forced to rely on online royality free portals. Even though it has become easier with services such as Soundcloud to find the correct music for your project, it seems like it has become harder to find music that can be used legally. Lets face it, no one likes it when your youtube's video is muted, and in the worst case, you will get sued. To help you find and choose your soundtrack safely we created this list, but before we start lets clear which licensing models are available today:
Creative commons is probably the most common way to licence music today. Compared to licences such as "all rights reserved", creative commons aims to provide an alternative. The creative Commons website describe's what actions you have to take when using music labeled with "CC". In most cases the minimum requirement is an attribution.
Unfortunately in most cases Royality Free music is not actually "free". The sunny side is that you most of the time, you dont have to attribute the creator/composer, but be sure to read the terms when purchasing as some of the sites only let you use the music for one project.
If you want to go extra safe and extra cheap, public domain (also labeled as CC 0) is the way to go. The downside is that the music you will find has probably been used in every 5th video on youtube. If you find something that works for your project you have the right to "do what you want with it".
