Would Ken give all of us a clear and definitive answer ?
Limit: 120 meters as confirmed by himself or 500 meters, as by the DJI site ?

The max altitude is limited to 400ft from take off point.

I was ready to purchase a Phantom 4 but the 400ft above take off point height restiction is a decision changer. I fly outside of controlled airspace regularly and the 400ft laws do not even apply once you fly in such areas in Australia. In such areas this kind of restriction is ridiculous. If CASA (Australia's airspace governing body) don't have a problem with a 400ft height limit in such areas then why should DJI? It seems as though I will be sticking with the P3P unless they change it to the same as the P3P manual override function in the future.  DJI need to realise that people fly these amazing peices of technology outside the US.

If it is the same as the P3 series (adjustable up to 500m), then I'm back in!

Ken, I would go back and edit your first post if this is truly the case.  Or strike through the font and correct.

On the "Specs" page there is:
Max Service Ceiling Above Sea Level        19685 feet (6000 m)
(Software altitude limit: 400 feet above takeoff point)
Inside the "Beginner mode" description they write:
When beginner mode is switched off, the Phantom 4 will default to a maximum flight altitude of 390ft (120m) above the takeoff point. This can be adjusted to a maximum of 1640ft (500m). You can also set your own maximum distance.
So that is really a contradiction to be ruled out...
I am afraid that 500m ALT is possible as of now without GEO-Fencing (v1.6) and 400ft will be a reality from v1.7 and higher... (maybe it could become a matter of "warning/authorization zone" email inquiries)

Before i purchased  my new phantom 4 i read the paragraph you have posted with the limit being able to set at 500m so this is the one they better ship to me.

Just guessing, but maybe it is really related to GEO fencing:
max ALT 400ft inside "authorization/warning" without dji permission and 1640ft when permission granted.
Outside any restriction areas 1640ft ALT as standard restriction...

Although I see where the idea comes from, imagine you start from the top of a mountain and with the 5km range you would be in helicopter/plane airspace in notime anyways. These limits still need a lot of work

DJI needs to change its P4-"Specs" web page then ASAP, because there it says "(Software altitude limit: 400 feet above takeoff point)".

Happy to have initiated this discussion, contributed to clear a very sensitive point and positively ended the debate.
With the limit of 500 meters altitude confirmed, P4 is a really a great new bird of DJI.

I am  really happy with my P3. I don't see the need of upgrading for obvious reasons but mainly cause the new things might not even work 100%. like the people tracking, it some one works in an open field and manage to lose track of the person, so what do you expect is going to happen when you walk in crowded areas? the censors it has to avoid crashing seem to work but that needs to be put to the test on normal use. if I'm not mistaken most crashes happened on tree branches.the limitations DJI put on the drone is like  me buying a corvette, I would love to have one but if they put 70Mph limitations to it it would be worthless.

I was live chatting with a seemingly knowledgeable tech. That fella told me its default is just under 400'... I asked if I can adjust it and he dodged the question. Basically he relayed to me that the GeoSystem is more influential in this unit. If you have tried the GeoSystem you will now notice 10x's the"red" circle. Screw it. I canceled my pre order of 2 birds and 2 extra batteries. Im soooo sad and disapointed. However I just became a DJI team member and have unlocked full features like unlimited altitude. This has been a major benefit. I am a licensed Pilot and have over 10 years under my belt. This was a major factor in becoming a "beta" and new line tester. But man. If I cant adjust this P4 to higher altitudes its no better than a Syma X8c.

Good Gawd people, DJI states the limits for the P4 are the same as the P3, so quit canceling or holding off on orders over rumors.

I can confirm. The max altitude is 500 meters. Just like the P3 and the I1.

I'm curious how you became a DJI team member and talk about full features and unlimited altitude.
And if you were a "new line tester" you would see in the P4 app while connected to the aircraft that you can set it 500m.

DJI Rocks! I have a P3 Pro and just ordered the P4. I live in the mountains and was very troubled when I read the 400 ft software limit last night. If I had known this,  I would not have bought it. But, it looks like DJI has change their position as the specs now state " “6000 m (Default altitude limit: 120 m above takeoff point)”. I'm assuming the default is similar to what I have when operating my P3 ?  I hope so! I think these are the kind of experiences which make or break customer loyalty. I'm, also guessing DJI has what it takes to make a future drone which can use actual ground elevation to calculate the legal limit. Maybe some type of warning then goes off

1650 ft looks pretty impressive imo compared to everything else out there.. not much drones can reach this altitude or the limit is set way too low by the vendor.. i just came across this vid and its actually really good so just thought i'd share.

I've read all the posts here regarding the altitude limits and all. I understand the max altitude from takeoff point is 1,640FT if set in the app. Etc. Etc..

My questions:
#1 In reality - is the DJI Phantom 4 capable of flying much higher but is just blocked by software not to?
#2 Adding to #1, why the restriction? If FAA rules state we can't go above 400ft (USA), then why even give us 1,640?

I'm not complaining. Believe me! I want to fly into the clouds if I could! I'm just curious as to why these limits. That's all. Why won't DJI open the capabilities for us to fly as high as the 4 will allow us?

1.  The Phantom 4 has a service ceiling of 6000 metres ASL so of course it could fly higher than 500 metres above home from most locations
2.  Because DJI's designers made it that way.
DJI have never explained their thinking.
You ask why DJI gave you more height then the  FAA 400 feet.
The FAA don't rule the world and there are plenty of situations under their control where it is quite legal to fly further than 400 feet above your home point (the world isn't all flat)
It's likely that DJI have decided for their own reasons that 500 metres is a reasonable level to allow to satisfy the needs of pilots and prevent idiots from flying so high that they can't descend without running out of battery.
It's a  compromise and doesn't handicap too many people too much of the time.

You have to tap in the box then enter 500 and it brings up an acceptance box then tap agree.
