5000 ft? Damn, thats damn close to a mile!

I found the story, the plane was Air France and cruising at 5,500', the drone actually passed only 5m under the planes left wing!!! That is just insane! It's only luck that jetliner didn't suck that drone up into one of the jets and have a major issue!

Man, 5,500 ft isn't your standard consumer drone folks. This thing has to be more serious commercial or even military.

Hard to believe they would even have time to see such a small thing going so fast.

A standard Phantom type drone would probably look like a fly to a jet cruising around 400-500 mph @5,500 in the clouds.

That why I'm saying this is a much larger commercial or military drone.

Well it just makes sense to me that if someone can get it a mile away from them horizontally.....  I'm just sayin'.

Commercial jet traveling to the tarmac for final approach and they see a drone?
everything about this says the commercial pilots are lying or the story is very much made up by someone who hates drones.

You would so not be able to see a drone unless it was a very large and very powerful model at that altitude.  The phantom line would not even be visible as it would blend it with its size and color.

I just smell false on so many levels with this story.

Yeah, anything a pilot see in the sky these days is a drone. The story is a lightweight grab, no useful information in it, powder puff.

Well hell, I stand corrected, people has successfully gotten their Phantom 2's close to the 5,000 ft range! We're talking clouds people. Thats crazy.

This is a P2 W/Gopro. Supposed to 4,900 ft. I'm not sure who he's getting those numbers, It doesn't looking like he's using an monitor or FPV when he lands. But it's hard to argue seeing the footage of the bird in the clouds.

Yeah, I would never ever want to try to fly that high with a quad.
Funny thing is, that is what really sold me on the Phantom.
Only because of the range that high and how it handled the wind, meant I could fly very far away.

I call BS on this story or at least on the report.  No way at that speed and size of a non military aircraft could it have been seen.

No wonder, there is an ongoing regulation for drones, what an idiot. This kind of flying is affecting us all, I’m glad that this isn’t my buddy

I really don't want to see these kind of news, that will just make the government release more laws about drones.

A commercial jet at 5,500ft is not going to be going 4-500mph even if it were legal. Speed limit under 10,000ft is 250kts.

Yes that story was all over the news media here yesterday (radio news every 30 minutes and it was even the first story for the 8pm TV news shows). This will certainly help the anti-amateur drone lobby. Incidentally, at 400 mph, that's nearly 200 m/s. I can barely see my Phantom at 500 meters, and that's about 2.5 seconds upstream at that speed. The copilot had enough time to unlock the auto-pilot and do an avoidance maneuver while the pilot said he saw it pass 5 meters from the wing. In 2.5 seconds those guys are top guns... or it was MUCH bigger than a Phantom.

I find that story very hard to believe knowing that flying in a small single engine aircraft it's hard to see even another such plane. Going at 250mph there is possibly no way to spot a small drone far enough away to be able to turn off auto pilot and make adjustments in your flight path, just no way! They are lying their $*#* off!

Maybe they seen a UFO!

A drone weighing 1 kilogram would not damage a jet hugely unless it goes straight to the engine then there's a chance and unless the drone is real big..

P3 can hit 6000 if it wasn't limited, a p2 could probably hit that sadly.

will try that once I get tired of my drone, just unlimit it and go up until the battery dies. Then salvage the memory card. Out somewhere  where there are no airtraffic routes

An airliner on final approach at 5500 ft will be traveling about 170kts. The drone would have been seen. I believe the first downed passenger jet will bring about bans on all recreational drone flights. The only drones allowed in the air will be military, police and certified pilots.

Once upon a time pilots reported UFOs all the time.
Nowdays they report drones.
At 5000 feet, the chances that they saw someone's recreational quadcopter are pretty slim.
The FAA data base is full of even more fanciful "incidents"

Multi-engine planes are designed to fly with one engine as well as pilots are trained to fly with one engine. So in the event their is a turbine engine malfunction, the plane will still be able to safely land.

But yes, I agree that the first time a jetliner sucks up a consumer drone whether or lands or crashes, will be the day they lay the hammer down banning everything or adopt extreme penalties and regulations.

170 kts is a little over 285 Feet Per Second, I for one have a hard time locating the phantom at 1000 feet against the sky if it is hovering.  Picking one out of the clouds while in IFR on approach??  Possible but pretty far fetched for a little, white, quad.  A big, black, Octo hanging a DSLR is another matter..
