I had surgery last fall and am just now starting to feeling well enough to fly again.  What have I missed?

Well, I hate to be Captain Obvious..... but you have missed 5 months of flying

Your batteries have probably cone into hibernation mode. If you power them on and the red light goes on and will not turn off and the battery will not power up.
leave it for at least 5 minutes then put the batteries on the stock charger and after charging they'll be fine.

You might have a few firmware updates

Well, Paul Kerry got the boot, the adapter for the osmo x5 is still missing in action and my inspire went from a Ferrari to a dodge caravan after the cold weather battery update.

Might have to move down here mate.....we don't know what cool is.......cool beer maybe...

    Make sure you have fresh Batteries,  and I mean FRESH  CHARGE !

Just a correction, you can go from 1.4 to 1.6 with no issues at all. if you are under 1.3, you have to stop there, then you can go to 1.6
All changes needed in previous updates are included in later updates.
Only recommended that if you go to 1.6 straight from 1.4 and have an issue, then to do it step by step.

1-You cant Go backwards without stair stepping correct?
2- Im not sure on this part and want to be crystal clear "if you are under 1.3, you have to stop there, then you can go to 1.6"
Is this what you mean below
Does this sound better YOU CAN JUMP FROM 1.4 TO 1.6.  BUT If you are having any  difficulty stairstep from YOUR current (FW)  to get to the  LATEST firmware.  NOTE**  If at 1.3 must go to 1.4  and then you can go directly to 1.6 or stairstep to get there if any problems arise.

You can only go back one update. If on 1.4 and you want to try 1.6 and update to 1.6, you can no longer go to 1.4. You will only be able to downgrade to 1.5.
Yes, your verbiage sounds better BUT if user is on 1.1 or 1.2, they must install 1.3, then that can jump to 1.6
