Jeff test the Phantom 4 new firmware version 01.01.0301 on Collision Avoidance.

I've seen plenty of demos of the CA system while at the hands of the pilot doing a manual flight towards an object, I would like to see what it does if you put a building/object between you and the bird while in RTH mode.  I would like to see what it does.  Does it actually try to find a way around the object to get home?

Don't quote me on this, but I think I read somewhere that the collision avoidance is not active in emergency RTH

Thanks for testing this important new safety feature on yourself as a human test dummy - now I don't have to do it! Ha!  I had to laugh when you were visibly (and understandably) more jumpy during Test #5 after Test #4 failed because you were in S mode.

Don't worry, it will ascend and pass the obstacle, if there is not enough power for it to pass and return home, it will initiate the low power landing, the front vision avoidance system still work when RTH.

Although the avoidance system is reliable under appropriate condition, I still suggest you don't fly it towards to people directly.

The P4 dips right after it stops. I have seen this in most of the collision avoidance test videos. What happens if the drone is very close to the ground? My guess is that it is fine due to ground effect and/or the down sensors but it would be nice to know.

It climbs to avoid, the only caveat I saw was that it won't exceed the altitude limit (I'm not sure if this is the set limit or the 500m absolute limit).

Good video Mike! It is really scary but it worked. It is obvious that in some fparticular scenarios, the 500 m limitation may cause a trouble. In your case, you were like that the P4 following the straight line to home did not have to climb above 500 m to pass those threes.

It will fly OVER a building not around. If it's approaching an object in RTH it will ascend until it can clear ur.

It has to do with the translational lift. I guess it doesn't compensate good enought when low in the ground to compensate both, the translational lift loss and the ground effect gain.
