The pilot of a commercial jetliner said his plane nearly collided with a drone while approaching Los Angeles International Airport on Friday afternoon, sparking a search by L.A. police and sheriff's officials for the owner of the unmanned aircraft.

Blah blah blah right into total legislation to not be able to fly. I love how they report it as a fact. 5000 feet eh? How could he tell it was a drone? He was probably drinking a tomato juice while chatting with the steward and saw a bird.

All I saw was blah blah blah until you finished it. I agree but it's all perception. They've been flying them near heathrow forever and LAX is  having 5000 feet near misses? BS. The government gets what it wants and it doesn't want us flying these things. I give it a year. Seriously thinking of retitning my hobby drones and just keeping the ones to shoot.

Mandatory geofencing will be very soon as a mandate for all micro drones and commercial drones.

Sad to say but I have to agree! With the technology in our Phantoms and other drones I'm sure it won't be long before the authorities could simply choose to ground all drones with a simple push of a button...Just shut down all flying in any chosen area. Transponders will be the next big thing that manufacturers will be required to install in all drones sold in the US and I'm sure other countries would simply follow along, (i.e., California emotion laws).

Most likely it wasn't a drone. It was probably swamp gas or a weather baloon. Both can be easily mistaken for a drone to the untrained eye.

I saw a pepperoni pizza at 12,000 feet the other day while bringing in my X-Wing fighter to land at my place. It was a 6 engine model with gimbal stabilised crust. I told the locals cops about it, but they were playing X-Box and did not want to know.

Fosters is everywhere, but it is not considered a good Australian beer, mostly for tourists. Like you do, we have micro-breweries here that make really good beers. There is one up in the hills near me that has set up in an old buttery factory and they make about 7 different beers, the best of which is called Gippsland Gold.

Some breweries specialise in brewing very high strength beers, but there is no point drinking them out, one bottle would put you over our drink-drive limits. Fortunately you can buy them in cartons. This is them: http://www.grand-ridge.com.au/index.html Take a look at their range.

Here is another with a weird name: http://www.docsliquor.com.au/Sho ... tectCookieSupport=1 Can personally recommend that one too, after getting totally sh*t-faced on it one night.

There are plenty more though, we are after all a nation of beer drinkers.

Can the OP rename this thread "Flyin Bryan's Whiskey and Beefin'  " thread....?

Few things to chime in....
Phone editing.  In the browser, go 'settings / request desk top version'  That should bring up the standard version of the site on your phone.  Small, but has all usual features.

Airport flybys:  We get these reports all the time too in the UK.  Part of me thinks how a pilot flying at over 400 mph can see something 12 inches across. Are they really able to see drones so high, so fast, so close to an airport?  You get a lot of dick heads in this world, but who flies a drone at 1,000 - 2,000 feet less than a mile or two from an airport?

Geo fencing:  Actually Bryan, I reckon if it was done properly and reasonably, that could actually save us a load of grief.  What's wrong with stopping dickheads from flying at 2,000 ft within a couple of miles of an airport?  What's bad is when you get stupid over the top restrictions, like a 30 mile no fly zone around the super bowl.  I would way prefer a reasonable airport geo fencing before we get pointless blanket bans almost everywhere.

Whiskey:
Looking at the times you were posting, the whiskey was way over due.  Gin o'Clock is around 5-6pm for me; not sure when Whiskey o'clock is, but shouldn't be much later in my alcoholically expert opinion...

Dominos:
They're pretty much like McDs; everywhere. But that's fine with double pepperoni me.

Ian

Domino's Pizza Enterprises (trading as Domino's) is an Australian public company that holds the exclusive master franchise for the Domino's Pizza brand network in Australia, New Zealand, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Principality of Monaco, Japan and Germany. Across these markets, Domino's Pizza Enterprises (DPE) has over 1,900 stores. In May 2005 DPE became the first publicly listed pizza company in Australia. It is the largest pizza chain in Australia in terms of network store numbers and network sales, as well as the largest franchisee for the Domino's Pizza brand in the world[3]/

heres the best story yet .....

Passengers on the Flying Scotsman were terrified when a drone flew into the train on its way across the North York Moors.

Police are investigating how the drone managed to slam into a rear carriage of the train on preserved railway tracks between Grosmont and Pickering.

A huge bang stunned those on board, with many now voicing their concerns about drones and their safety.

Drones have been frequently used to record images of the Flying Scotsman which has recently been seen in public for the first time in more than a decade following a £4.2m restoration.

The incident, which happened around 4pm on Sunday, shocked Linda Wild, of Whitby, who was travelling in carriage H.

"We could see a drone on the left-hand side of the train and thought it must be taking photos.

"The next thing we knew there was an almighty crash. It sounded like it had crashed into the roof.

"It was such a shock and could have caused a major accident. What if it had gone through the window?" she added.

Mrs Wild, who was travelling with her husband and some friends, said the rest of the journey was "brilliant".

She complained to a guard on the train and British Transport Police are now investigating along with North Yorkshire Moors Railway bosses.

Liz Parkes, head of operations at the NYMR said: "We are aware of a report of a drone grazing the back carriage of the 15.30 60103 Flying Scotsman service from Grosmont on Sunday March 13 in the Huntingbridge area.

"This is currently being investigated by the NYMR and British Transport Police.

While no damage was caused, obviously drones are distracting to our drivers and could result in a criminal prosecution for endangering trains.

"If any members of the public become aware of any incidents of this nature, we would urge them to report it immediately to a North Yorkshire Moors Railway staff member or the British Transport Police so it can be investigated further."

they were on a steam train that was obviously running on steel tracks and they were able to hear a loud bang ???????  then there was a report of a drone GRAZING the rear of the train ????  it just gets better every day ..
the same story is in another paper and they say the drone was flying beside the train and it hit a tree knocking the camera off and it was the camera that hit the train ..... jeeeeez you couldn't make it up !!!!!!!  although in this case it was made up ....

Unless it was a military drone, seeing any consumer drone at 5000 feet is extremely unlikely. DJI makes the most popular drones and the past two generations only go up to about 1600 feet. Previous generation drones can go to 5000 but only briefly and the drone is likely to run out of power before it gets back on the ground so it is a suicide mission. So for this story to be true, a consumer would have had to fly a 2 year old drone to 5000 feet risking its loss and in the exact instant and place where the max altitude was reached, a jet plane had to fly by 200 feet away. Improbable in the extreme. Then there is the whole question of whether a commercial jet pilot could identify a small object as a drone as it passes 200 feet away at hundreds of miles an hour. I suspect that pilots have been seeing small objects going by forever but only recently have started attributing them to drones. Before they were UFOs. In actual fact they are probably birds, balloons or trash blown high into the sky.
Oh and had an actual drone hit a commercial jet (something which has never occurred to my knowlege) it is likely that nothing would happen:
http://www.engadget.com/2016/03/ ... ab-comment-27948475

I guess the headline "Object spotted at 5000 feet by pilot mistaken for a drone which would have posed no real danger" would not have caught anyone's attention.

Thanks I'll check that out, way better to ask a local than to look at online reviews.

As Geebax said fosters is not actually considered a good beer here:
Some others to try:
*Anything from the Matilda bay brewing company (Fat Yak is a particular favourite of mine at the moment and Redback an old favourite) Matilda Bay
*Lord Nelson Hotel range -Unfortunately only two available offsite but both very fine beers but even more tragic unlikely to be available in the US. I've spent considerable time and investment "testing and verifying" the quality of the beers here. If you visit Sydney it would be remiss not to go. The Lord Nelson
Of the more commercial beers Coopers, James Squire, James Boag all make some fine examples of the amber fluid.

In most cases they are best served "frantic" (that perfect temperature just before any ice forms).

This exactly why I posted my frivolous pizza reply. This is most likely a purely fictitious report invented by a media whore with nothing better to do. Like you, I thought '5,000 feet?', yeah not damn likely.

Maybe we should get Adam and Jamie to chuck a P3 into the front of a gas turbine engine and see what happens? They seem to be pretty good at doing that sort of thing.

I'm sorry but to me, I have landed small air craft, that at around 300 to 500 mph and doing all it takes to land. I just don't see how any one could see a drone. I rember first time I flew I saw a plain and didn't give it a 2nd thought as it was  as I thought was over50 miles away. my instructor explained that a ae seed of around 120 and the big je at about 200 o 300 mph that in less than a few min that we would know them personally. lol
