My kid was in the school idol competition, I decided to choose the OSMO to film this.    Brought everything, extension, tripod, flexi mic, batteries, tooth pick... set up to 2.7k 30fps.   Everything was working normal untill 3 minutes into the performance, the video feed suddenly went dark.  I kept trying to restart but never could get the video feed back.  I use the tooth pick to check the fan it was not stuck...
I went home, reset the osmo, connect the OSMO to my other iphone, tried everything...   It would connect to GO, but no video feed, and the fan would not start, it got so hot that I can smell the circuit board if you know what I mean.  I suspect something might be overheated because I had mute fan setting on, the fan might have failed to work during recording.
We are going on a ski trip tomorrow, I don't think I can take the OSMO with us.
Very disappointing!!

Adele,

Is it not safe to turn on the mute fan option?!

Hi,
Don't worry, the Mute Fan function can work well and safely in normal situation.
Raywongmusic's case is an exception, the unit may has some mechanical damage, it may be just an accident.

If you have any problem, please contact us anytime.

Hi Adele,

How did you figure he has a damaged unit and its not because the system of the osmo was overheated?

When I first received my osmo the cooling fan was stuck, after a few minutes it got very hot so I took some canned air and got the fan working. Personally I think the fan mute option was a bad idea.

Hi Adela, I am living in Hong Kong, what is the best way to deal with this in my case?  Bring it to the Hong Kong dealer?  Courier it to ShenZhen?   Bring it in person to SZ?
Thanks

Hi,
I would suggest contacting your dealer first, and I hope your dealer will give you a good solution. If that doesn't work, you can email to support@dji.com, our support representative will deal with your case accordingly.
Since you're based in HK, maybe it's not a big trouble for you to take the Osmo yourself to our HQ service center, you would also have our specialist to help you out.

Actually, you can choose to mute the fan or not.
Do you have any good suggestion? We would be highly appreciated, anyway.

I mean, the damage of that unit may be caused by overheat, or it happened a short-circuit accidentally. Anyway, it seems that there is something wrong with the circuit board inside presently.
Technically, the unit is designed to turn on the fan automatically if it gets too hot (to a certain temperature). In this case, we'll analyze defect if we receive the unit.

Adela, can you on behalf of DJI guarantee that turning the fan off will definitely not cause problems? as an engineer in a previous life I can see the fan bearings getting very hot in "off" mode, causing the fan to seize.
Please assure us that this will definitely not happen. I am not going to use this mode until there is a consensus from us users that all is well.  However , I would like confirmation from DJI just to be sure.

PS my concern is from the fact that quality control on this fan is pretty awful with people haveing to start the fan with a toothpick or canned air! I'm glad it isn't a boing 737 I can just see the pilot spinning up a stuck turbine with a garden rake!!

Hi, Rod,
Thanks for your concern!
This feature has gone through our tests under normal situation. If the Osmo get really hot, the fan will be activated to cool the inner components.
The performance may be influenced by the surroundings, like the temperature or humidity in the air, which we can't guarantee...Some defect may be caused by accident, and we'll have to deal with it as an exception.
Regardless, we will strive to improve fan issues as time goes on..
