Today, I’d like to show you all the Phantom’s new intelligent features, namely visual tracking. Join me to learn about what Obstacle Avoidance, ActiveTrack and TapFly look like in the real world.
1.This demo is only for your reference. DJI does not recommend users to use the Phantom 4 to track another aircraft;
2. When tracking another aircraft, please choose an open area and ensure that Phantom 4 flies higher than the tracked aircraft. Avoid tracking at the same height.
Step 1: After the Phantom takes off, tap the remote controller icon at the lower left of the screen to enter the Intelligent Flight Modes.
Step 2: Read Intelligent Mode Terms and tap “Agree” to use the Intelligent Flight Modes.
Step 3: Select “ActiveTrack” from the following four Intelligent Flight Modes. (The Inspire 1 Pro Black Edition is hovering in the air)
Step 4: Tap“x” in the lower left corner to close the “Quick Start Guide”. Meanwhile, in ActiveTrack mode, the parameters of the camera will automatically adjust according to the scene, as shown below:
Step 5: When the remote controller icon at the lower left of the screen is replaced by ActiveTrack icon means that the Phantom 4 has successfully turned on“ActiveTrack”mode.
You can select a subject to track by simply tapping the screen or dragging a box around the object. (As shown below, since the tracked Inspire 1 Pro is too far away from the Phantom and its color is too similar to the background, the Phantom cannot recognize it.)
Step 6: Reduce the distance between the Phantom 4 and the Inspire. Hover the Inspire in front of and below Phantom 4. Select the Inspire as the subject to track. When the box turns green it means that the subject is successfully being tracked. Please note that to ensure a smooth tracking, you need to draw a box big enough to cover the entire subject. Then, tap “ActiveTrack” to confirm the selection. (NOTE: As mentioned in Chapter 7, it is recommended to make the subject turn 360 degrees so that the Phantom 4 can learn about it and remember its features, which helps to keep the subject at the center of the frame while it’s moving.)
Step 7: Tap “GO” in the green box to trigger “ActiveTrack” mode. At first, the Phantom 4 doesn’t fly with the Inspire, but hovers and tracks the subject through the movement of its gimbal and camera.
Step 8: Now, the Phantom 4 is flying with and tracking the Inspire.

Step 9: Tap the“STOP” button on the screen or press the Intelligent Flight “Pause” button on the remote controller to exit ActiveTrack.
The video below demonstrates the Phantom 4 tracking and filming Inspire 1 Pro automatically in its ActiveTrack mode. Please note that it is risky to use the Phantom 4 to track another aircraft.
You can see from the video that the Phantom 4 adjusts its speed and direction in line with Inspire 1 Pro. As you can also see the framing is pretty good. The camera tilts towards the subject and keeps it in the middle of your frame.
The video below demonstrates the Phantom 4 tracking and filming a person in its ActiveTrack mode.
IMPORTANT: For the sake of safety, when tracking a person, please fly the Phantom 4 higher than the person and track the person from a safe distance.
You can see from the video that the Phantom 4 adjusts its speed and direction in line with the model. As you can also see the framing is pretty good. The camera tilts towards the subject and keeps it in the middle of your frame.
Firstly, just like in “Demo 1”, select the person as your subject to track.
NOTE:
As mentioned, try to draw a box big enough to cover the subject. In the picture below, although the model is selected, it is not covered entirely. In this situation, the Phantom 4 may lose track of the subject. It is suggested that you expand the box to the dotted blue line.
The green box doesn’t cover the model entirely. Though the Phantom 4 can still track the person, it may lose its subject during tracking. So it is suggested that you expand the box to the dotted blue line.

NOTE: In ActiveTrack mode, when the tracked subject is blocked, the green box will turn red to warn you of losing your subject.
Then the Phantom 4 will search for the subject according to the features of the subject that the system has learned and remembered.
If it fails to find the tracked subject, you can fly the Phantom towards the subject and re-select the subject to resume tracking.
Composition Adjustment in ActiveTrack Mode
As shown below, the car is selected as the tracked subject and is kept at the center of the frame. For better photo composition, you can tilt or pan the camera by swiping the screen. Swipe the screen upward, and the camera will slowly tilt upward. Now the car is at the bottom of the camera view and is still kept in the frame and tracked.
Step 1: Tap the remote controller icon at the lower left of the screen to enter the Intelligent Flight Mode.
Step 2: Read the Intelligent Mode Terms and tap “Agree” button to use the intelligent flight features.
Step 3: Select “TapFly” from the following four Intelligent Flight Modes.
Step 4: The remote controller icon at the lower left of the screen is replaced by the TapFly icon. You can set the flight speed by moving the slider to the right of the screen. As shown below, the current speed is 5.5m/s.
Step 5: Select the beach on the screen and wait for the“GO” icon to appear. Tap “GO” to confirm the selection. The aircraft will automatically fly towards the target.
The TapFly mode is in progress

Step 6: Tap “STOP” button on the screen or press the Intelligent Flight “Pause” button on the remote controller to exit TapFly.
Step 7: Finally, tap the RTH icon to fly your Phantom 4 back. So easy!
The video below demonstrates the Phantom 4 flying automatically towards its target in TapFly mode.
You can see from the video, the Phantom 4 automatically adjust its altitude and hovers when it senses an obstacle in front of it.
TapFly Demo
Tap the screen to fly the Phantom 4 towards the cliff and it hovers before it hits the rock.
1. Ensure that the aircraft is in P-mode and fly the Phantom 4 towards the cliff. Soon, the screen will show a green and yellow warning bar.
2. When the aircraft is about 7.5m away from the rock, the warning bar turns from green to yellow.
3. When the aircraft is about 5m away from the rock, the warning bar starts to widen and the newly added area turns red.
4. When the aircraft is about 2m away from the rock, the red area in the warning bar grows larger. The Phantom 4 stops and hovers in front of the rock.

If you have the switch in P mode it will always be in GPS mode unless there is not enough satellites and if so it will go into P-ATTI mode and the VPS will work but the aircraft will float around.
And it in in your control, you just have to learn to fly without GPS.
Take it outside in an open area and learn to fly in ATTI mode. The only difference is it will float with the wind. Practice that and if you panic and it starts getting away from you, just switch back to GPS mode and it will stay in one place. You really need to learn how to fly in ATTI mode, it will make you a much better pilot.
