A bit of advice... I see your on a Mac... You will benefit by downloading and installing ffdrop. ffdrop uses ffmpeg to compress, along with the open source x264 codec. Apples .h264 codec suffers from whats a long standing gamma bug where blacks become washed out and whites become dirty. With x264 rather than .h264 you can use the Full color profile not available from your editor's .h264 renderer.
You'll need an extra parameter in one of the ffdrop scripts to access the full color profile which is  -pix_fmt yuvj420p

If you have any sort of meta tool which allows you to view the color data of a video you'll notice than 9/10's of all .h264 video are rendered with a limited color space. You can side step this with .x264 and the -pix_fmt yuvj420p  parameter when rendering. Your colors will them be much bolder and blacks more rich as well as maintain the purity of whites.

In Final Cut Pro X, I didn't have the option to adjust bitrate. I did check one of my videos, however, and the bitrate is apparently maintained. I was afraid I might have to export with Compressor or something....

Excellent advice and clearly explained.  Thanks again for your help.

PowerDirector 14 full version automatically downsizes the bitrate to 15,000 on H.264 1080P 29.97 fps output; it easily allows you to increase up to 60,000 if you wish, so a very useful tip.

Cheers
