Software won't permit it.  
Edit, maybe on the older ones with manual mode.

Try shutting the motors off in flight and then turn them back on quick, let me know how it works.

Cool video; but seems a sure fire way to get those hairline cracks forming on the motor housings...  And chuck in an accidental CSC as well

Ditto - If you want to flip and roll just buy a cheap quad.  The Phantom idea along with some others with cameras is for aerial photography.

You are correct. To give the copter control inputs that causes it to lose balance and tumble in the air is dangerous. My guess is you need to be high enough so when you really lose control and it starts falling to the ground, you just flip the switch back to ATTI or GPS (phantom 2) and hope it recovers before hitting the ground.
