Sonar would report altitude im pretty sure

I'll test it on Thursday of this week (the next day I can fly). I previously crashed and bent one of my sensors on the bottom, so my VPS doesn't work correctly anyways. On Thursday, Ill test out this theory (I live right next to a giant lake) and report back the results of the test.

So it's not possible to switch the VPS off, but could that be changed with a firmware update?

essentially yes it could be fixed with FW. Whether or not its going to be is a different story.

Great work.  I wonder if plugs could be fashioned to fit in the camera holes.  My P4 arrives in the next few days and I was really hoping to do a lot of water work.  

DJI should really add this back into the firmware.

You cannot disable VPS in GO app? I think I can on my P3 A, or is that not a "full disable"?

I wonder why you think it is a good idea to disable a feature that DJI built into the aircraft by such a crude method, without knowing what effect it is like to have. Putting tape over the sensors is certainly likely to stop the downward section of the obstacle avoidance system at the very least.

Why exactly is it an issue? Does it get confused over water, but takes precedence over GPS?

I did not see the "flying over water" tutorial, but i know there's one. Have you checked, does this answer some of the stuff you wonder about?
