"Make sure anytime you film you have a high speed SD card in the camera. In the controller change it to log, or if you are Filming with a lot of moving angles change to 1080 / 120fps. 4k is for slow pan or forward moves since it's only 30fps. Also theres have to be a settings for the speed of pan and yaw. Putting it on the slowest will increase the fps quality overall."

This is a text i just received from a friend that has his own photo and video company. Do you agree with all of his statements?

I ask because ive been shooting everything in 4k, but might change now....

It all seems quite feasible, but just remember, this is also just an opinion.  There are no facts when discussing what looks good & what doesn't as it's all very subjective.  It depends what effect you're after & what you like.  Don't blindly follow someone else's ideas of what works & stick to it religiously because an "expert" said.

Try it out for yourself & see what happens.  See if you can appreciate the differences.  If you can, then you can apply each setting to your own work.  It's a mistake to take someone else's settings & apply them to everything you do.

Totally agree, do your own experiments and see. I personally shoot in 1080 as it suffices for my needs even though I have p3p!

I tried 2.7k today.....it recorded very studdery or choppy.........then it stopped recording only 500 feet away.......I switched to 1080-30fps (which I normally shot) and all was nice and smooth.
Maybe it's the SD card that it came w/ cant record fast enough I dunno.... I do have a Samsung UHS-1  class 10 I should try. it's still in the package LOL.

Ok why not....i'll try it after dinner LOL.

This doesn't concur with my experience.  I prefer to shoot at 24 fps as IMO you get better motion blur and therefore smoother looking video.  I would only use a higher frame rate to video something that was moving very quickly. I also shoot at 2.7k or 4k rather than 1080 because even if I am outputting at 1080 it gives scope to crop or more importantly straighten the footage without loosing quality. Of course if you are one of the lucky few that doesn't have a wonky gimbal this doesn't matter as much.  Shooting at 4k also future proofs your footage to some extent.

This is one of my big concerns.  1080p will be a small old format before long.

I pretty much agree with what he is saying, except the 1080p 120fps bit. That mode uses a cropped portion of the sensor and does not produce very good images.

With the speed technology changes happen at,  it will not be long until 4k goes the way of the 8 track tape ,  never mind 1080p.  I hear tell of 8 k and higher already.

I love the rich color and sharp definition in my 4K videos, and would never willingly step down...
I guess it might depend on the purpose of your video. But I truly enjoy seeing the minute details.

You're sure it's not your playback device causing the choppy video?  Try exporting 2.7k to 1080p & see if that works.

Most likely what Nigelw said. It can also be related to your preferred player. If you don't use it yet, try VLC. It seems to work well for a lot of people.
I agree that 4k is the best way to (currently) futureproof your video. That said, if you want to edit 4k you need a pretty beefy PC. So for most people the best solution is to shoot 4K, convert it to lower (again, as said) and then edit it. Then, when you get/build a 4k editing PC in the future you can still use the original 4k footage (assuming you've stored that of course ;) )

One thing that I have found is if you slow down the tilt of  the camera in the options you will only have that speed until you go back and change it however I have my tilt set to fast with an ease at the end because the controller for tilt on the remote is proportional so if I move the control wheel fast it tilts fast but if I move it slow it moves slow, having it st this way gives me the best of both worlds, I don't have to go into the settings each time I want to change it. This works for me, give it a go. I hope this helps.

If you are experiencing choppy or glitchy recordings odds are that your SD card isn't up to the task. Find a decent SD card (Lexar, Sandisk Extreme) and make sure its Class 10. Thats a ton of data to write to a card, and if its slow it will drop frames. Thats why your 1080p looks good, but not your 2.7k.

As for the frame rates, 120fps for stuff you want to slow down in post, 24fps for smoother film look, or shoot 60fps for general and transcode before editing.

The video processing system in the Phantom does not drop frames, if it cannot keep up the record process it simply stops recording. The problem is most like what the poster is watching the material on, in other words a computer that is not able to handle high resolution material.

My day job is in TV post production, and I don't think we'll see the death of 1080 very soon. If you're in the movie business, then that's a different beast altogether, and you wouldn't be using a phantom or an inspire to shoot aerial footage anyway. Having said that, we're seeing a lot of people originate in 4k (especially wildlife shooters) and we get a lot of 4k aerials from inspires and phantoms - even if the programmes are finished in HD. So if you're going to be selling your footage, then I would shoot in 4k - there's definitely a groundswell of opinion that this 'future proofs' your footage.

I agree 1080 won't go away for ages, but with computer monitors getting higher & higher resolutions (iMac 4K & 5K) it won't fill the screen so well in comparison.  That & some people seem to enjoy filling there living room with a massive TV they can't sit far enough back from to watch!

I have a Samsung 50 inch 4K smart TV.   It has USB inputs and I have a card reader plugged into one of them.  When I finish a flight, I can just plug the MicroSD card into the reader and view my footage directly on the TV.

It's truly breathtaking...  Even sitting a few feet from the screen, the detail is amazing.

On the other hand, I don't see much difference between 1080P and 4K on my 24 inch Samsung computer monitor with the computer's video resolution set to 1920x1200 pixels.   It seems to me that the larger formats need larger screens to look better.

What about formatting the SD card? I have a scandisc extreme 64 gig. Can I use it out of the box or does it require formatting? My first few vids are choppy. Recorded in 4K and viewed with VLC. Havn't bought N Dfilters yet but plan to.  PC is a few years old. I'll try 1080p when it stops raining.
