Has anyone tried dyeing P4's propellers? I wonder if the props will dye with its glossy finish.

I would think that would add a little weight, but it looks cool.  I was wondering if anyone had tried to make quieter blades. It almost sounds as if the electric motors make the most noise. I was videotaping a middle school track meet, with permission of course, and every head was up till I landed it. Very distracting even though I stayed above 200 feet.

...

Here is what i did

The process is...
heat water to around 80 degree C, mix the dye in it, and in a tray or bottle, immerse the props and let it stand for 2 hours, if you want a deeper colour, keep it in for longer.

Some cook the props in hot water to reduce the time, but i was a bit scared that i might deform them, so kept it longer in hot water.

Black was the longest, took 20 hours, it turned blue to dark blue and then black.
Deep orange is 8 hours.

As you see its quite easy to do it, if you dont mind waiting longer, then warm water and overnight dipping and you should be good.

Ok I understand the part about mixing the dye in a pan and heating it, so you then laid a tray or container put the props in there and cover with the liquid from the pan leave for 2 hours or longer

Does it matter about the liquid then cooling, like the colour black you left for 20 hours so the liquid must have been cold

Did you the Rit Dye powder or liquid

Is this the correct product
Rit DyeMore Liquid Synthetic Fiber Dye Nylon Polyester Clothing AcrylicRit DyeMore Liquid Dye

Rit DyeMore is a synthetic  dye that will color 100% polyester, acrylic, acetate, nylon and  polyester/cotton blends. The Stove Top method—dyeing the items in a pot  on the stove—is recommended especially when dyeing polyester and  acrylic, because a very high temperature is needed to dye these fabrics.  Nylon tends to dye very quickly and much darker than the other fibers  so the actual time needed in the dye bath is much less.

Cooling of the liquid is fine, it just takes a bit longer, black one was dark purple after 14 hours, so just left it in longer.

The liquid one is easy to work with compared to the powder,

Get a small disposable baking tray or any wide mouthed bottle to immerse the props in

Here is the one which i used, but dyemore also works.

Thanks for all the information. I try the Synthetic first. The natural dye doesn't works as well on my P3S propellers.

Please do! I'm a red fanatic-- Volvo S60 red…  love cherries… Nosecone of my Belgian Flag Rocket…

Is the amount of liquid dye to use per x amount of water specified on the Rit bottle?  (I would imagine it is, but as this is mainly used for fabrics…)  Are the DJI Phantom 3S props nylon?

Thanks!

Best regards,

Steve Schulte

I personally won't be painting my props as I do like the sleek look of the Phantom.

The colors do make it stand out though.

Not sure if the P3S props are nylon. I just dumped a whole bottle of the dye into a pan and diluted it with small amount of very hot water just enough to submerge the props. I waited the water to cool a bit before I put my P3S props in. You will have to soak it at least 4 to 5 hours. They came out very nicely.

Would that require you to disassemble the RC? Wouldn't that void the warranty?

Oh I stripped down mine on day 1 and rebuilt it. Of course don't do it if you are not sure what you are doing and yes that does void the warrenty.

If you heat the water to between 180F and 211F (just below boiling), the entire process only takes 20 mins or so (thats what I did for the yellow props).  Just keep stirring.  Also, the black and silver rings stay that color and are very easy to see, even after dying.

You can control the colour by lowering the water temperature, will take a bit longer, but you can take them out to check for the right tint of your choice, if you want it darker leave them longer.....

Agreed.  I'd like a bit lighter.  I think you can achieve it - just don't spend more than a couple of mins in the dye.

There is a thread on this going on over at PhantomPilots - several people weighed and checked balance after dying and there was no change.
