Not drone footage but a pan and scan of a panorama I shot at Elie, Scotland. I set me thinking about a drone at the time, albeit this shot would not have been possible with a Phantom ;)

Why would it not have been possible with the Phantom?  I have done many pano's with my Phantoms,  I just posted one that was 33 photos stitched together.  It now displays on Google Maps.

The reason I couldn't do it with the phantom is due to the 94degree field of view and the 12Mpix resolution.

Apologies for the forthcoming maths but it might be of interest

It's a 305Mpixel image done with a 200mm lens on a 38MPix camera, covering approx 10miles of coastline in 4 mins.

The pano field of view is 247degrees and took 17 38Mpix images at 200mm. The Phantom 4 camera field of view is 94 degrees so to get the same field of view with the Phantom takes only 2.6 images (247/94) and they're only 12Mpix. (31Mpix pano)

It's really the focal length and resolution that's the limiting factor and is why the Phantom couldn't have taken it.

Before I got a Phantom I thought wouldn't it be great to fly up that coast a few hundred meters off shore but I now realise that 10 miles is quite a trip for a drone

Here's a simulated example of how the P4 would have looked vs the original (assuming the P4 was giving pixel perfect detail at 12mpix)

Ok.  I'm not a pro photographer,  but I understand the field of view and the resolution. So primarily the issue would be the resolution?  Sorry if I seem dense,  I'm  trying to learn about this stuff.  Here is the Google Maps link to my pano:

Wow Mr Davidson - that is a superb piece of work - you had me thinking you had actually used a drone during the middle section there ... only the static water and people reminded me you hadn't.

Very nicely done.

So to sum it up, you mean the camera of the Phantom does not meet your requirements?

Wow, that's quite a view. Gave me an interesting read looking the place up! Thanks for the link

You are correct - it's really the resolution of the final image that's the issue. There are two ways that could be addressed; much more sensor resolution or a longer focal length lens (or both!). In any case, I think the Phantom would have a hard time holding still enough to avoid motion blur as I often see evidence of it with it's current camera setup.

There are ways to mitigate against motion blur where the camera takes a series of shots every time the shitter is pressed and it automatically picks the sharpest one in the hope that one of them is sharp.

Another downside with a longer focal length/higher resolution is that we'd really need the ability to zoom/focus and have aperture control so that the depth of field (how much is in focus) can be controlled. All that extra stuff would add significant weight not to mention cost.

Everything is a compromise

Hehe - I'm actually having quite a fun time with the Phantom creating 360 panos. Yes it would be nice to have some more resolution and dynamic range and the technology is already out there but at a significant cost/risk. The P4 at its price point has given me some valuable experience and decent results so I'm happy at the moment, even surprised at the results 12Mpix on a wide angle lens is  giving

That is very kind of you to say - thank you! I enjoy experimenting with imagery. Unfortunately, my video skills are lacking - I'm finding it's a very different mind set compared with still images. I'm not sure how I'll fare with actual drone video imagery in the long term. The desire to shoot video is opposed with the fear or crashing.

I now really appreciate the skill and effort that goes into making videos!

The town is called "Elie" on the East Coast of Scotland not far from St.Andrews.

Here is a link to Elie on Google Maps. https://goo.gl/maps/PqwjRHVvmnC2

There are lots of beautiful fishing villages nearby such as Crail and Pittenweem.

I have some more photos I took in the area below;
