I'M TRYING TO UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE TO THE NEW 1.9.6.  I am wondering about a couple things....
1) I downloaded the zip file to my computer
2) I removed the bird's SD card and formatted it
3) I moved the zip file onto the SD card  ----  Question - do you have to transfer the zip to the bird through the computer? Can't you just copy it to the card and insert into the bird?
4) When I moved the zip to the card it copied as...  P3S_FW_V01.09.0060   I added the .bin and inserted into the bird
5) Launched the bird but nothing happens - just have a quick blinking green light
6) ALSO...  Whe I start the bird the message is ...  "IMU preheating"  --  This takes quite a while - Is this normal?

     I have upgraded before and never had a problem. I think this is the way I did it in the past, but I'm getting older and the memory ins't quite what it used to be.

Something goes wrong with your copied files in the SD card. Format again the SD card and copy in the SD card root only the bin file. If understand well your drone model is phantom 3 advanced. So copy only the file "P3S_FW_V01.09.0060.bin" and not the ZIP file. At the end update also all your extra batteries. See also the DJI video tutorial with fimware update procedure:

I tried again and was almost successful - - When the update finished I had a solid RED light - removed the SD and read the AB Result - it said to repeat the procedure and this I will do, but not until the battery shuts off.
At the end of the update I couldn't turn off the bird - the battery would not respond (is this the battery upgrade screwing with it?) Cannot turn on or turn off, so I removed it from the bird manually in the state it is currently in.  The middle two lights are on solid and even if I put the battery on the charger it does nothing.
What should I do now????

Hello Zippy P3A, could you post the result file as well as the hidden LOG here? You can find the Log by these steps:

1. Enable the option of viewing hidden files in your OS. Below are the websites where you can check how to show the hidden files in your PC.

2.Enter the root directory of the SD card, then find the hidden folder MISC and enter it. There is LOG folder in it.

  

3.The LOG txt file is under the LOG folder.

The AB file result did not appear after trying to upgrade.  The computer is already set to "show hidden  files".

Thanks, Paladin, As soon as I put the battery back in the drone (with the 2 middle green lights). The drone starts as it normally does with the beeps. Here's what I get... 1) No signal to the drone from RC 2) App says "Battery Error"  -   The battery voltage is 0%   -   gimble light quickly  flashing red 3) App battery display page shows "0.00V" for all 4 cells,  remaining powder = 0mAh,  Total Capacity = 5200, Battery Life = 2%, and Times charged = 1 (has been a lot more). 4) I re-formatted the SD card and put it in the bird, then the battery (2 lights) The bird started as it should...  Red & Green blinking light.  After about 6-7 minutes, the light went solid red. 5) When I looked at the battery it had 3 lights were on (red, off, on, on, on). Removed battery and 3 lights stayed on. 6) I read the SD card for info and all it said is...  "The firmware on the SD card is identical to or older than the current firmware on the aircraft."   .Before sending this back to you, I tried to upgrade about 6 more times (using different SD cards, saving the file in different ways, etc.).  formatted, download, transfer to SD, open and save the file with the .bin suffx, kept only that on the SD card and inserted it. Most everytime I tried the bird, it blinked fast green, then no light, then solid green, all in a short time and it remains there.  Reading it afterwards, the only thing there was a new   "DCIM" folder and the .bin file - clicked on the .bin file to see the same file but extracted. During all the ins and outs of the battery, it started working correctly. That's about it.  Drone won't fly, battery seemd ok, app works and so does the remote. What do you suggest HELP!

Around 2-3 weeks ago I had the problem above, not being able to update the firmware to 1.9.6.  You (Paladin) had me post the LOG and then you found that something was missing and the bird had to go in for repair.
I just got it back and am surprised of all they did to the drone. New motors and a few other things.
BUT, when I looked at the sim card, this is all that is on it now (see below).
Can you tell me where I should start upgrading to install the latest firmware?

Current readings that I can get --  App - 2.9.0     RC - 1.6.0
I'm really having a hard time.  From above, you see that I just got the bird back from DJI after a repair.
These are the problems...
1) Cannot load 1.09.0006 no matter how I try. A couple times, when I put the SD card into the bird, all the light does is go green.
   Some other times it goes through the red/green blinking but only for about 4-5 minutes.
2) The RD will not connect with the drone - it says "NO Signal" or "Disconnected". I varied the 'turn on' sequence but still no signal.
3) Here is the latest LOG contents...   (I see many "successes" and "Fails" and "aborts".

Result: Failed.
Reboot the aircraft and try to upgrade the firmware again.

Ken,    Update from the previous entry.
I found I had to re-link the RC - connects well, now.
Readings are now --  APP - 2.9.0      Drone - 1.9.6      RC - 1.6.0      Battery - ??
Do I use the same procedure to update the RC?
Is the battery supposed to be upgraded, too?  According to the procedure in the manual, or is there a new one?

Everything is updated, the latest RC firmware is 1.6.
If a battery needs updating the app will tell you, if it did not then you are fine.
