What is the best method for extracting stills from a video and been able to edit the still the same as you would a normal raw file? Ive hardly done much video at all because if i do take video, i see a nice photo oppertunity and have to stop the video to take the photo. Would be far easier extracting a still from video then i could just shoot constant video. Only software i have is Lightroom 5 and Windows movie maker. Ive heard alot of good things about Premiere Pro, would that be worth getting? Can it do it? Thanks.

VLC media allows for stills while you are viewing the video.

It's freeware.

Yes, VLC is easy to use.
But extracting stills from video will not give full quality stills.
They will be a lower resolution and shot at video shutter speeds so could be unsharp.

I simply just screen shot what I want from a video. No fuss, no muss.

FAS1 what software do you use?

On a 5K iMac, the screen grabs from 4K video are fabulous.

- I use the basic Apple feature Shift-Cmd-4, then select the area. Puts the screen grab in the Desktop folder
- Double click to open the file in Preview.
- File... Duplicate.  File... Save... give it a good name, and make the type .jpg
- Adjust color. Adjust size if necessary. Save.

I use Cyberlink powerdirector. What I found challenging in VLC was to zero in on a specific frame.... here i can go frame by frame in either direction...
