Hey guys. I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch with 2.8 GHz and 8GB of ram with the apple base graphics card. I wanted to know what the minimum computer requirements are for 4K playback and editing and also what mac you guys recommend i should get of the laptops or the 21.5" iMac. Thanks in advance

According to my experience, Core i7 processor and 8GB RAM will be necessary. Also, it would be better to use VLCPlayer. Hope other Mac users can share their experience here.

It might sound crazy but I do all my editing on my iPad Pro 12.9" model.  It can play and edit the raw 4K footage no issues.  Where most PC's and iMacs struggle to play and edit this stuff, my iPad chews it up with ease.

Although the resolution on the iPad is only 2732x2048 for playback, it looks superb.  I can upload the edited footage to YouTube in 4K and also export the footage in 4K and playback on my 4K / UHD Smart TV and it looks amazing.

I may purchase a new MacBook Pro to do editing at some point, but only when the display is 4K.

Just search for Franky Tartner in YouTube.  Here is a video edited on my iPad. Obviously if you look at it direct in YouTube you can choose the best quality. They are 4K but you need serious Internet to view the full 4K.   1440 should be fine

Yeah I heard processor was key but 8 gigs was more than enough. Waiting on Apple to launch the new Macs in September. Thanks a lot!

That's really interesting. I've never heard of an iPad pro being able to handle 4k footage. I'll look in to it and definitely look at your vids. Thanks man!

You could always test out your existing machine by downloading some 4k samples. It may be able to rescale the 4k video to your screen size. I have a surface pro 3 here (i5 4300U with 4GB RAM) which does a good job of scaling the 4k to its screen. It also has a 4k @ 30 fps output via mini display port connection, which works well with a 4k monitor I have (ASUS 23.6 inch). So in terms of playback what you have might be sufficient.
For editing I use Sony Movie Studio Platinum on my desktop which is well specified. I can output 4k @ 60fps using an older GTX650 graphics card. The editor actually runs on the Surface pro 3, but is slow in comparison, you would be speaking several hours to render on it compared to half an hour on the desktop.
