If a P4 or Mavic is executing an automatic RTH and it encounters an obsticle (tree, etc.), will the unit halt forward movement and then attempt to gain altitude to clear the object, and then continue to home?

Thanks

Yes that's what it should do, but it's advisable to set your return home higher than anything in the area your flying if you loose connection it will fly to a safe height and come home safely.

Yes, sure. I was just wondering if one were to make an error and under-specify the RTH altitude, whether the unit would attempt to intelligently correct, or just halt at the obstacle.

Ah, I found this in the Mavic manual:

Obstacle Avoidance During RTH

Aircraft can now sense and actively attempt to avoid obstacle during FailSafe RTH, provided that the light condition is ideal for the Forward Vision System. The details on how the aircraft will behave during obstacle avoid is listed below:

1. Aircraft decelerates when an obstacle is sensed at 65 feet (20 meters) ahead.

2. Aircraft stops and hover then start ascending vertically to avoid the obstacle. Eventually, the aircraft will stop climbing when it is at least 16 feet (5 meters) above the detected obstacle.

3. Failsafe RTH procedure resume, the aircraft will continue flying to the Home Point at the current altitude.
