Can you zoom in while videoing with the x5

You need a compatible zoom lens.

So the $1,799 Zenmuses x5 doesn't come out of the box capable to zoom?  

You can digital zoom with the standard lens, but for optical zoom you would need the Olympus 14-42 zoom lens. Otherwise the Z3 camera but posts on this forum suggest issues with that. I fly the X5 with the Oly 14-42 with great results.

Definitely go for the optical zoom. The digital/pinch zoom is such a joke, I forgot it exists. Olympus lens as stated above.

Will the z3 be able to zoom in tighter than the z5 with the olympus 14-42 lens?
