This video got me wondering: what is the payload capability of the Mavic? Ie how much weight can it carry - like strapped-on batteries?

I don't think the mavic can carry much more than itself?

I thought UK also required you maintain LOS. Must be mistaken.

UK is line of sight but I don't know what country this is tbh. They are people who fly fixed wing fpv in the UK for miles.

Impressive rig.

I look forward to seeing how far he manages to fly it.

If he is chasing ultimate distance, he may need to put his antenna booster on a mast.

Do you think someone will make a antenna booster like the p4 has and do they work.

Cheers for the link ,I would like them not for distance but just for signal strength. I could get thr p4 ones and make them fit the mavic.

Think they might fit if not I think you will see ones for Mavic on the market soon, yeah for signal strength there a good option and inexpensive.

I've just been talking to someone who has a p4 and he has that type of extender and he has them for signal boost not for distance.

When is he going to stop modding this mavic.

Hopefully he keeps experimenting. What he is doing seems potentially very useful, for a lot of scenarios.

I'm also curious about why he finds low-altitude to give the best results for long range flying. I would thought a higher altitude would mean greater radio reach and also less ground radio interference.

Speaking of interference, I'd be keen to see how his rig works in a city environment. Amplifiers and big antennas may potentially amplify interference too. (?)

How many of you fly your Phantom/Mavic out of sight?  I haven't gotten mine yet, but I would think half the fun would be getting it places you wouldn't normally get to see, thus flying it far.  I know Transport Canada for example says you have to have it in sight at all times, but they can't honestly expect that..

Low altitude probably due to lower Wind, the higher you the more Wind you get.

Makes sense.

Would probably have to strike a balance between maintaining a height that would keep the signal going OK the further you went out vs fighting wind. 20m might be too low, but 400m would probably be too high. He seems to have settled on about 150 ft (~50m) altitude.

Other interesting variables, at least for battery usage, seem to be wind direction, aircraft speed (moderately slow @ 30mph), and flight mode (Sport mode probably being more battery friendly, since both Forward and Downward vision systems are disabled).

In that last video he states 29 minute flight time which is unimpressive considering you get near 25 minutes without two extra batteries.

It says at the end he's going to put bigger batteries on the mavic but that's adding more weight = more power used. It's swings and roundabouts to me.

Very true.
Won't likely change either unless by some miracle the energy density (power/weight) of batteries changes dramatically, or the drone software becomes significantly smarter at managing in-flight battery drain. Mavic is already pushing the envelope, I think.

I know I'm not messing with mine when I get it I'm will just put some signal boosters on and that's all I think I'll need. The mavic is awesome and there's no need to mod it.
