no chance, if it was a mavic it would have been spinning violently and vearing to the left.. Defo a ballon, way more stable platform

9000ft ... yeah I doubt it very much, and a mavic would probs be too small for them to see anyway.

Don't feed the media scaremongering, there's enough out there as it is ...

I'm with Johnny 5.  9,000 feet?  Please.  That's called a balloon.

Highly doubt the drone was a Mavic.  First the encounter took place at 9000 ft and the Mavic has a ceiling of 5000 ft.  Second due to it's size and the closure rates, I would bet a pilot wouldn't detect the Mavic until it was too close to avoid.  As a former pilot I know that at that altitude there are speed restrictions of 250 MPH.

Could have been Trump's giant ego. That's been flying pretty high lately...

Seriously... A drone at 9000 ft, so big that they could see it at a distance, with time enough to course correct around it? Not a chance. It was probably a balloon.

But a balloon I wouldn't think would require a sudden course correction that injured flight attendants.

Impossible for it to be a mavic. Altitude is limited to 500 meters in the software. If the aircraft was traveling at 9000 AGL the mavic would have never been able to bust over 1650ft...

Because it's the internet, and I think I'm legally obligated to correct people or something, it's 250 kt not mph ;)

But that's semantics - totally agree with you in terms of seeing it. I'll be flying along in a Cessna and often large birds like a hawk are super tough to spot at only 100 kt.  (Heck, even other planes are tough to spot half the time). I hadn't heard about a service ceiling. Is that a software limitation based on 5000ft above point of take off? I've seen videos of Phantoms flying at Everest Base Camp so I'd have a tough time believing that it couldn't fly above 5000ft density altitude.

FWIW, the Max Service Ceiling Above Sea Level is 16404 feet (5000 m)...

Max service ceiling has nothing to do with max altitude. DJI software limits the height above ground level to 500m.

The only time you'll hit the max service ceiling is if you take off from a very, very high mountain.

I can barely see my Mavic when it's 400 ft away. And that's with some assistance from the noise. No way can you see it from far out in a jet.

I was responding to the person mentioning ceiling and getting 5,000 meters confused with 5,000 feet.  And, max service ceiling and max altitude can be directly related...  True altitude is elevation above sea level.  Sure there are other contexts, like absolute altitude, but you can't say they are not related without proper context.
