I know that Premiere is h.265 compatible, but apparently not with DJIs version.  It won't import.  Any work arounds?

I just ran into this issue. Shot some test h.265 footage and can't get it to play in any programs besides DIVX on my mac. When I load to Premier i get an error saying codec missing, and AE's error reads as damaged file.

VLC (on Windows 10) seems stubborn with MOV for me and I may end up deleting it.  Media Player Classic x64 does work better than VLC without it freezing up on playback.

Yep, with the MP4 container, not MOV.

When I first tried importing it, Premiere said I needed to install the HEVC codec, and by clicking "Ok", it did it automatically and then imported the video just fine.

Did this change quality?  I'm loving the HEVC over AVCHD - picture quality, lack of artifacts, color accuracy, and dynamic range.

I'm only able to VIEW the 30fps HEVC stuff directly on a 4k TV.  No 60fps.  Guess a 2017 4k TV will fix it.

Ok this is going to sound crazy but it works. I saw above that .MP4 files were working in Windows.  I have a iMac so I wanted to see if it would work for me.  Unfortunately I shot a bunch of stuff today on my P4P using the H.265 format saved to .MOV files.  So I said what the heck.  I went into my folder where my files are from today. I edited the name of the file by changing the extension from a .MOV file to a .MP4 extension and accepted the change of extension and then dragged and dropped into Premiere. Works perfectly. No issues whatsoever. I can see the clips, the preview works great and I can add the clips to the timeline without issue and edit them, tweak them, etc... Will dig into it more to see about color grading and such but hopefully this works.

I did do what someone had previously suggested which was to just do a short clip and export to H.265 so Premiere installs the codec before trying this.  But I presume it would ask you to install when you try to import into Premiere if that codec wasn't installed on your computer.

So looks like you need to change to MP4 in DJI Go App in order to be able to easily work with these files in Premiere.  Unfortunately they still don't work in Final Cut Pro X, but hopefully they will get their act together and add that codec to the app soon.

FIX!!!

Just so everyone knows, you must shoot MP4 not MOV for h.265 playback in Premiere.
If you shot h.265 in MOV you can just change the extension from .mov to .mp4 in the finder. Problem solved!

Try DaVinci Resolve.

Don't blame Adobe. Lens correction profile is embedded into DNG produced by P4Pro and Lightroom makes use of it automatically.

You guys just need to rename the files from .mov to .mp4. Then you drag them into Premiere 2017, it prompts you that it needs the AEVC codec. It then downloads automatically and all of my files worked.

As stated above, use .mp4 and have an updated version of Premiere. If you have the CC license, it should be up to date already. Older CS versions don't support H.265 as far as I know. Keep in mind that 4K H.265 footage requires a ridiculous amount of processing power if you want to edit it in its original format, so you might want to create proxies of the clips before you start editing. Unless you have a very high-end PC.

I have to use .MOV if I want to use H.265 in Vegas Pro 14 without extra steps. I opened a ticket with Magix on this and provided them the output of MediaInfo to analyze. They say that the H.265 MP4 header has some unrecognizable entries that is throwing their software off. I can use FFmpeg on the MP4 files and then they work. I reported this in another thread in this forum. Hopefully DJI can find what is causing programs to not recognize their H.265 MP4 files.

I have been using h.265 with PP since day one. No issues, other than you need a super computer to process all the compressed information. I have zero issues transcoding it, and the footage looks bloody smick.

Official Adobe answer from Adobe Dave (yes, I work for Adobe)  ...- just saw this post  - as some of you might know, I work very closely with DJI with our tools and we try and test as early as we can. With new cameras/codecs/ firmware changes it takes time.. just being honest here...  (feel free to forward threads/topics on my youtube channel as that will forward to my  inbox automatically - just search dhelmly on Youtube.

Here's what actually happening with the H265/HEVC issue where some people can import and some can't. We first started support in CC2015 so any earlier versions don't have the codec. When you first try and import a H265 file a message should appear telling you that you need to license the codec . The license is part of Premiere Pro CC but not automatically turned on for every user unless they use it. WHY? there is actually a license  fee that we manage for you and it gets activated with your first Import or Export. You need to be connected to the internet for the first time you use it and once you do that you don't need to be connected to license again unless you re-install or there is a major update. We are always "tweaking" playback with CPU/GPU support.. BTW - H265 playback is decent in Premiere Pro CC 2017. Lots of people use it as a H265 player - BUT, Encoding takes a longtime  - just give us more time on that   I hope this helps .. Dave..

I couldn't get Resolve to handle h264 with any resemblance of speed. So I loaded the h264 into Resolve, rendered it with no corrections at all to DNxHD file then loaded that DNxHD file to edit and Resolve was able to scrub the timeline and everything quite quickly as normal. But the h264 file out of the camera was slowwwwwww in Resolve. Of course my media players wouldn't play the NDxHD file but it allowed me to edit it then render as desired.

I'm only using H.256 with Premiere Pro CC 2016.  Shoot in MP4.  Never had an issue.  Rendering is rather slow.  By the way my PC (Win. 7) is a i5 with 8Gb of mem and a AMD 1Gb graphics card - was bought in 2005!  I get good, smooth results.  Only wish that Premier would also give my the rendered file in H.265 and not 264...

Just chipping in here, but cpu architecture makes a big difference - I upgraded my i7 IvyBridge to Broadwell-E (otherwise similar both 12 thread etc) to get H-265 support (not a cheap exercise) but it's the difference between being usable and not.

Would still welcome some performance improvements in Premiere/AE Adobe though?

Nick

Many thanks for pointing that out , THAT IS THE CRITICAL missing link.

Background - Currently (as of Feb 2017)  Apple does not support HEVC/H265 in Quicktime (remember there is a license fee and Apple would need to somehow charge for that - no way to purchase Quicktime Pro with MPEG add-on  like the old days) .

When Premiere sees a .mov we use our Quicktime Importer to read and decode the file. If we see a .mp4 then we use the Adobe Importer and the importer then figures out what type of MPEG file it is. H265 is partof the MP4 spec which is why it needs to be .mp4.

What if I already shot my H265 footage in .mov  - SIMPLE FIX - rename all your .movs to .mp4 and the Adobe Importer will decode the H265.

NOTE for DJI - Feature Request: When H265 is chosen as the codec please default the file type to .mp4 and don't give the option to use .mov unless Apple updates Quicktime to support H265.

WORKFLOW TIP - DO NOT use H265 if you intend to do a lot of editing. While it's  awesome that the files are high quality and smaller than H264 it;s also

If you have problem to import DJI Phantom 4 Pro+ 4K H.265 video to Premiere Pro, you can try to encode the H.265 codec to other Premiere Pro accepted editing codec such as H.264, MPEG-2, etc.

Make sure that the all the H.265 files can be edit in Adobe Premiere Pro, you’ll need to convert H.265 video files to something editable like MPEG-2 for Premiere Pro.

Actually, it’s not so hard to do the trick as long as you apply a professional H.265 converter app. Pavtube Video Converter for Mac is just what you need to achieve your goal. With it, you can effortlessly transcode H.265 to Premiere Pro friendly movie format like MPEG-2, MOV (Note: it applies to all kinds of Adobe Premiere including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro CS3/ CS4/ CS5/CS6/CC) keeping the original quality.
