Anyone know if there is a h.265 codec for quicktime. Also does anyone have any luck getting the footage to import into Adobe Premier or AE?

Quicktime blows; use VLC.  It works.  It's free.

Try DaVinci Resolve.  It works.  It's free.
Seeing a pattern here?

VLC will not play back either, it opens the h.265 and shows the first frame but will not ply back. Have you had luck with the P4P h.265 files in Resolve

Wow, really?  This is exactly why I recommended BOTH of those apps - they work great with no setup or fuss.

I've installed no codecs - it's not Windows lol.

VLC plays EVERYTHING, even 4k60 H.264 AVC from the P4P.

My iMac played it, but editing is out of the question for now.  The Samsung 4k TVs play them fine too.  I've only tried 4k30 HEVC for now.

The files are FREAKIN HUGE dude.  I have one @ 5:18 & that was 4GB.  That was 4k30, H.265, .MOV, D-Cinelike.

BTW, D-Cinelike is the REAL DEAL!  It's just like "none" but a ton more dynamic range, but not like D-log looks untouched.

Oh, I noticed that 5:18 clip had excellent stats using the Inspector in VLC.  It's supposed to be 100Mbps VBR, but most of the time it floated around 105-106Mbps!!  The lowest it dropped to was 91Mbps for a split-second here & there.

I've been having stuck frames in VLC as well in Windows 10 (The MOV ones.).  Seems "Media Player Classic x64" runs them better without sticking, but it's not made for Macs.

OK, just got some more footage...

1080p/60 in HEVC doesn't work on the Mac or the 2015 Samsung 4k Series 9.  The TV stutters, but reads it and the Mac just hates it no matter the app.  4k30 works on the TV and VLC on the Mac somehow.

No matter the case, looks like HEVC H.265 is unusable at this point (at least for me).  Give it time & it'll be fine.  Plus I need a newer main 4k TV, it seems.  I ordered 1 from Amazon on Black Friday, but Amazon royally screwed me.

Looks like h.265 does NOT work on the Sierra platform presently. Have tried VLC, (single frame read), QT, iMovie, FCP X, Da Vinci Resolve.

Looks like an Apple side issue.

Hope DJI can work out something...

I'm not sure its just Sierra. I posted with the intent of saying that even with the latest OS, the files aren't playing.

Now you can view the h.265 file in VLC but only if you put it in slow mo and watch literally frame by frame. There is available horsepower for sure but I think that converting to a larger h.264 file might be the sensible thing to do for now.

Yeah I've got a 2015 top spec i7 MacBook Pro 15", can't play back 100mbit h265 4K clips anywhere near smoothly on VLC or any other player. Imports ok into premiere, but it crawls playback. El Capitan, but equally bad performance in windows 10 under boot camp.

Any of you guys able to play 4K h265/hevc smoothly at all? It's to the point where I won't even be able to watch the footage until it's rendered/transcoded, which is super silly.

We just have to wait a little. Most of use don't realise how compute heavy h.265 at 4K is. You can do h.265 at 1080p OK for now. When hardware decode chips become available in bulk, things will change. FYI, even with a Xeon processor Mac Pro, one can't get smooth 4K h.265 decoding.

For most intents and purposes, h.264 suffices. h.265 compresses really tight but one can live with larger file sizes.

Whats bizzar is I have a way better time editing and playing back the RAW Video (dng sequences)  from the Inspire. I think they did something to their h.265 that wasn't done to h.265 encodes previously.

Great - good to hear it's not just some of us.

I don't mind bigger file sizes, but in theory & practice, are h265 & h264 both identical in terms of image quality and compression artefacts at 100mb/s? Obviously besides file sizes.

Wow, so the only place to watch it is on a 4K Smart TV? That's Crazy!!
I'm waiting for my Pro+, i'm think about cancelling now, especially if h265 isn't usable on my iMac.
If i edit video's i use iMovie. I usually don't edit, i throw the raw video's on youtube.
I love watching them on my Samsung 4k tv.

I have the P4, and Mavic. Do you guys think i should wait for P5? lol
Is the h264 100mbit alot better than the P4's 60mbit?

The detail you can get on the new sensor and 100mbps encoding in h.264 is really breath-taking. I have a sequence where a pair of faraway birds barely a few pixels wide appear in a scene. You won't be disappointed with a P4P

Got my first crack at the H.265 footage today.
I edit in Premiere Pro CC on a 2013 IMac with SSD and 32GB RAM.
First thing is to make sure they are .mp4 and not .mov.
Premiere will import them just fine but it is slooooooow on playback.  No surprise there.
I transcoded into ProRes 422 and re-imported and hooray!  Smooth sailing.
Did some quick color correcting and I think it is safe to say this drone and I are starting a beautiful friendship.

Not sure what the best intermediate codec is for the P4P but I'm sure it will become apparent over the coming weeks and months.

I am having hard time with h265 too. I can't play them nor edit/color correct them. (but i can run smoothly 2.5k cinemaDNG from blackmagic .. )

So do you recommend to convert those files to let's say prores 422 and do color correction on prores ? Since prores is 10bit 422 codec you won't be sacrificing anything am i right ?

h.265 codec for Mac ?

To my knowledge, in the Apple-ecosphere h.265 is actually and officially only available in cellular use of FaceTime using two iPhone 6.Adobe Premiere has native support for h.265, however, your computer should have the hardware that definitely support efficient HEVC playback:Intel 6th-generation ‘Skylake’ Core processors or newer
AMD 6th-generation ‘Carizzo’ APUs or newer
AMD ‘Fiji’ GPUs (Radeon R9 Fury/Fury X/Nano) or newer
Nvidia GM206 GPUs (GeForce GTX 960/950) or newer
Other Nvidia GeForce GTX 900 series GPUs have partial HEVC hardware decoding support
Qualcomm Snapdragon 805/615/410/208 SoCs or newer. Support ranges from 720p decoding on low-end parts to 4K playback on high-end parts.
Nvidia Tegra X1 SoCs or newer
Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5430 SoCs or newer
Apple A8 SoCs or newer
Some MediaTek SoCs from mid-2014 onwards

I have no luck to import H.265 to neither Adobe Premiere nor After Effects.

FCPX doesn't accept the H265 either. So a  conversion to ProRes is needed. In other threads I got some recommendations like iSkysoft and Brorsoft which work, but I'd rather avoid this extensive workflow.

Cannot play h.265 correctly too using VLC (last version on Sierra, iMac Late 2013, 24GB RAM, Nvidia GTX775M 2GB, Fusion drive).
It seems there is no difference in quality between h.264 and h.265 so I'll stay with h.264. But there is a huge quality improvement compared to the P4 !
