I have the P3A and have been flying it for a year or so.  I recently tried to use the droneplay app for 3d mapping and i am having some issues.   Even though i can control the drone when i try and use the droneplay app, the drone won't actually connect to the app unless the dji go app is uninstalled.  Likewise,  if the droneplay app is installed,  my dji go app won't connect,  only if i uninstall the droneplay app.

I had the same thing happen when i tried to use a fpv vr app a while back. I am using my Samsung s5.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you already have the answer. Run one at a time. Yes, not the answer you wanted, but if that is the only way.  ;-)
You're not the first pilot to mention this coincidence.

There might be a way to avoid that mix up, but for now, just run one at a time. Nothing more you can do, that I know of.

Aside from using two different devices... ;-)

Your drone won't mind, or even know the difference.
