I am looking for Mavic pilots that have experience with Litchi. What are your pos/neg experiences? Can your recommend the combination? Is there anything better out there? What are the drawbacks and pitfalls?

My main recommendation would be keep the speed down and try to keep it as constant as possible if you're after smooth transitions between waypoints. Mavic's gimbal can be a bit sensitive to sudden speed changes and gimbal 'wobbles' can easily ruin footage.

I found Litchi's screen recording to be a bit buggy on my iPhone 6s+ with the video feed eventually becoming unusably choppy after about 10 minutes. Maybe an issue with my phone, not quite sure but worth preparing for!

Can you also use app-only control via WIFI with Litchi? Or do you have to use the controller?

I wouldn't have thought it would work over wifi only.
