so the new bird arrives next Thursday. Got a mini to use as dedicated device. What should I download ahead of time to make setup easier? I will get Dji go but should I download the various firmware upgrades or not yet?

I would just download DJI GO4.  It will walk you through updating the  bird/rd/battery firmware if it's out of date.  I've had all the latest P4/GO4 updates since early November and had no issues.

So I won't be using dji go? Instead I'll be using dji go4

Eliot...It sounds like you did just what I have done. GO4/ New iPad air 2. I have had no troubles at all with this combo.
Now just wait for your P4 and dream on.
I really love the larger screen.  I hope all works out well for you 2.

Have already read it cover to cover.

I've had my P4 since July, so naturally started with GO using iPad mini 4. Grabbed GO4 when released and have had no issues! Like the UI better and can't see any reason not to start with GO4 like Oden recommended.

I think that as long as you use the iPad. Only use DJIgo4 and use iPad solely for Phantom you should be fine.  I have had no issues at all with my P4 using it this way.
I'm still taking baby steps and never let p4 out of my sight.
Can't wait to see what you do with your P4...

Update: got the P4! Updates went well, actually quite fast. Updated the bird and the controller. First flight went well. Glad I got the P4! The 4K video is amazing!

So far so good Eliot.  I hope your experience is as great  as mine has been.  I can tell you this....The grand kids will be singing..Grandpa's gotta brand new bag
