Any one else notice that the Transcode tool for the Inspire 1 X3 will transcode 4k h265 from the inspire 2 to pro res 4k.
This after I spent 60 $ on a program that was recomended and it wouldn't transcode to 4k pro res. F$#K

Just tried it and I'm getting an error trying to transcode an Inspire2 file, what settings are you using?

I'm using the x4s camera, Full 4k 4096 x 2160, D-cinelike H265, Transcodingfrom the micros card. In the DJI App I'm using Profile 3, Gamma Inspire -1.

Hi Wild giles,

Can you give us some informations about the time for processing? And did you see a difference between a h.264 and h.265 file in terms of image quality?

Thanks

Patrick

I see almost no difference between the h.265 and the h264. h265. about a 10 min transcode for each 4gb h265, using a Mac Pro 6,1 - 6 core -D500.

Did you ask for a refund on the program that didn't work?

Just a small thought. Since you are transcoding H265 (or 264) to Prores, I guess its for workflow benafits. Why not just use proxy files for post-production and then relink to originals when finalising? You dont gain any details by using Prores, other then large files.

I don't like any of the transcodes that come out of the DJI tool. There are other apps that work MUCH faster and provide better results. I've been happy with all 3 of the following:
1: Adobe media encoder
2:Convert v4 from hdcinematics
3: ffmpeg.

Of these Convert V4 offers multi threaded processing plus a few other professional features, including conversion to either ProRes or DNxHR, even if you're on a PC. It uses ffmpeg as it's base, so, if you'd rather use a tool and aren't afraid of a command line app, go with ffmpeg. It's free.

Hi again. I actually was talking about making proxys within the editing app. What I often do is, after importing the H264 mov files into premiere, is to select all clips and choose "proxy" from the drop down menu. Then I convert them all to a lower resolution that I use for editing. When I am done editing and am ready to export the final movie I just relink to the originals again. It will take some time for premiere to render all effects but It runs in the background while I do some other work.

Yes, that is what I do with H264 footage. IF it looked like there was a 50% gain in information from recording with H265 on the x4s I still need to transcode the file to edit with. But alas I think the H265 is no better than H264.

Hi all,  Camping onto this thread because it's a related topic.  Using Adobe's media encoder, I'm getting an error when attempting to import a video taken yesterday on my P4P+ that was taken in H.265 using d.cinelike ,4K (3840x2160), 30fps/.mov format.  The error I'm receiving on import is:

"The file.../DJI_0192.MOV could not be imported.  The source file has an invalid codec.  Please check that it is a valid file."

Moving forward, I'll likely use the H.264 setting but interested in checking out what I was able to film using the H.265 setting yesterday.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for any advice and patience with me as I'm a newbe to this forum and look forward to sharing and contributing over time!

Best,
Greg

Since I dont know what platform you are on Mac/PC and what software you are using for editing, so I am guessing here. But you might need to install the HEVC codec separately to be able to edit H265.

Thanks Runi - I'm using an iMac running MacOS Sierra  and Final Cut Pro 10.3.2.  Final Cut doesn't support H265 yet so I was trying to encode to ProRes using Adobe's media encoder which apparently does support the ability to import H265, unless I've missing a step with Adobe media encoder that needs to happen to be able to import H265?  Appreciate you taking the time to try and help.  Not sure if this additional information is helpful?
Regards,
Greg

Cool..
But when everything is added together I dont think we gain anything from H265 other then filesize is smaller. So my advice is just to stick with what works, H264 and let the time solve the issue for us..

You can easily encode  4k h265 from the inspire 2 to pro res 4k with HD Video Converter for Mac, which will only cost you $35 dollars.

I have been researching and testing Mac video converters to transcode my H.265 files into ProRes. I haven't tried HD Video Converter yet and was curious if it works on Sierra. Their website does not indicate that version. Also, the last update to this program is almost 2 years ago so I am a little skeptical. What OS version are you running?

The Inspire X3 can only encode in h.264. Only the P4P and I2 can encode in h.265.
The advantage of h.265 is compactness.
There is not 'more information' in files transcoded from h.264 / h.265 to ProRes.
Its an intermediate codec intended for editing purposes.
Compression creates discrete cosine transforms of segments of the image and different codecs break each video frame into smaller blocks differently. Decoding the .mov or .mp4 files takes lots of computing power. more so for h.265. Its not recommended for the average user at the present time.
FCP X or Premiere Pro CC do transcoding during the edit process.

Maybe a dumb question:  Why would one want to transcode from H.265 to ProRes?  (I can only think it is required by a client?)  Is there a benefit (better resolution / file size)?  Is this not eliminating the SSD / ProRes (expensive) route? (Or do we pay much more for the SSD / ProRes because it can shoot in higher resolution?)  Just wondering...

Mac, including Final Cut Pro, doesn't support H.265 in the first place. More importantly though is that H.264/H.265 are highly compressed and not optimal for NLE. A 100 Mbps H.264 file on a new Mac Pro is choppy even before adding transitions and effects. H.264 can be converted upon import into FCPX but H.265 has to be transcoded with a 3rd party app like Brorsoft.

$60?  I only spent $30 on a little tool to deal with my videos which is much professional and helpful.

I successfully transcode  Inspire 2 4K H.265 to Apple Prores 4K with another H.265 Decoder application called Pavtube Video Converter, it only costs me $35, What's more, it is available on both Windows and Mac platform.

The application supports for the new macOS High Sierra.
