I read many comments where it is advised to turn the Maximum Distance switch to OFF.
What is the reason for this?

There have been many reports that with Max Distance set sometimes a new Home Point is set some distance away. The drone can suddenly initiate a RTH and as you are now outside the Max Distance you lose control.
