I personally use Cyberlink Power Director. You can get a copy on Ebay brand new for pretty cheap. Doesn't need to be the latest version. I use it to edit, cut, add transitions, titles, add music, and background noise, and publish to YouTube or burn to Blu Ray. More powerful than the free software, but not as powerful as some of Adobes, Sony products.

I'm currently "trying" Cyberlink PD 14 (and others) and I keep running into "Dji.mov is unavailable because it is broken or contains an error".  I have followed the steps on their forum and went a step further because it kept happening.  I deleted all samples but the problem persists.  Like the layout but I guess I'll uninstall and look for version 15 to try.

Well I just found PD 15 (30 day trial which I thought I understood it was a "full" version for testing"  and it does not have the error that PD 14 had.  BUT when I try to import a file from P4P I get the error "your version of powerdirector doesn't support this feature"!  WTF??  I don't want to pay $70 if it will not work.  It would be nice to try it but I can't.

You use PD 15 correct?  Everything works for importing and editing?

Thanks again for your help!

PD 15 is fine for me. If you get it you should be able to get Photo Director and Color Director. For stills I use Lightroom, but Photo Director does well. I have ULTRA

If inexpensive is $300/year than Premiere Pro.

PowerDirector 15 works very well for me, it's easy to use and does everything I require at the moment.

Gopro studio is free but it doesn't like the DJI files recorded on my P4, they need to be converted to Gopro compatible format before editing, which is a pain.

DaVinci Resolve. It's an excellent color corrector which has all the video editing features you need and more. The basic version is free, so you don't lose anything if you give it a try.

Or just pay the $300 ($299 actually) one time and get Final Cut Pro X if you are using a Mac.

Yes I tried DR and it would be awesome if it worked on my PC but I need a better graphics card.  No OpenCl accelerated GPU & CUDA accelerated GPU.  What kind of graphic card do you have?  The ones they suggest were around $300 so I thought I would go with another product for now.

Thanks for the reply!

Well I guess the "trial" of PD 15 is somewhat crippled and not the full version so you can test it.  Any you only have the PD 15 not Ultra or Ultimate?

I have a GTX 770, and it's getting a bit outdated now. If I had to buy a GPU now, it would be a GTX 1080, it's a bit pricy though. NVIDIA is currently working on a new architecture, which should make its way into consumer cards next year, perhaps then 4K workflow will be a breeze. Remember to make sure that your other components are not bottlenecks.

It comes up with a message about it not being Gopro original footage, it can be converted to the correct format using Gopro studio but it's a time consuming process I can do without

I think it's Ultra, it was about £55, has no color correction software included in the bundle, but I can add that later.  The only extras were a sound editor and screen recorder.  Very impressed so far with it.

For Powerdirector users, is anyone on here Editing 4K files? I found out the hard way that it is almost impossible to edit 4K files using PD 15. The preview window constantly lags, skips and/or freezes up. How are you all have Editing 4K?

I use Da Vinci Resolve, the free version and it handles 4K just fine, but I have a high spec computer to do it on, with a Radeon RX480 GPU card. That's the catch, Resolve is free, but the computer is expensive.

So you are able to apply effects, enhancement, speed/ reverse etc and still have real time 'preview' without any lags or freezing up at all?

Do you have a laptop or desktop computer? Was this custom build? Anyway you could provide a link to the computer if possible?

I have a Dell Inspiron 7567 Gaming Laptop. It has 16GB Ram, 512 SSD with Nvidia GEForce GTX 1050Ti Video Card. 4K video playback directly from the SD card is perfectly fine. However, previewing the same 4K files while editing is a nightmare.

Thanks

You can have real time preview, but only if you elect to lower the playback quality. But Resolve lets you do that, however any expectation of better performance is not realistic, it is one of the penalties you pay when you edit in 4K.

My computer is a large desktop, in a Corsair case, with 800 Watt Corsair Power supply, the mainboard is an Asus X-79 Deluxe with an Intel Core i7 6 core processor, 32 GB of fast G.Skill DRAM, water cooling for the processor, a Radeon RX480 GPU card, 8 x very fast SSD drives and  2 x 6 GB conventional hard drives for archiving.

I cannot provide you with a link to the computer, I assembled from components, and owes much to the gaming community in its design. I use it only for video editing.

I am seriously considering this set up (see eBay link below). For the overall value, it appears to be a steal. Do you think this would support 4K editing without any 'Preview' issues at all? Or should I keep looking?

Thanks

It is OK, but editing 4K with Resolve requires a good GPU and as many computer cores as possible. If you can afford more, try for a little higher spec. Unfortunately, the specifications for gaming are a little different to editing, which is why I built mine. Even so, mine is about 3 years old now.

I am finding PD 14 is perfect for editing 4K files which is all I film in now both with P4 & sony video camera.
If you set it up properly it does not really edit in 4k but uses shadow files and when finished editing it then finishes in 4k or whatever format you select.
My edited and finished product in 4k is no different to the video quality of the original 4k video as viewed on a 85 inch 4k TV

I know my PC should be alright with everything BUT my graphics card:
Windows 10 64 bit running on Crucial SSD m4 256GB Sata 3 6 Gb/sec (OS & Apps)
Working HD Seagate BarraCuda ST2000DM006 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 7200 rpm
CPU Core i7-2600K running @ 3.8
16 MB Ram
Onboard Video 2560x1600p Intel HD Graphics 3000 Core 850 MHz Memory 2108 MBytes
Samsung S940B 1280 x 1024 8ms

What is the minimum cost and suggestion for a graphic card?  4GB minimum, 2GB?

Thanks!

I went on eBay to find a card to use with Resolve and got an eVGA GeForce GTX 970 4Gb. After I installed that then Resolve stopped complaining about my graphics card when using 4K video from my P4.

But still it complains sometimes about being out of RAM. I have 16Gb and have some more on order. The 16Mb that you say that you have will be nowhere near enough : )

And like you I have a 256Gb SSD for system disk, but the optimised version of the video files that it produces (to speed up previews) can be hundreds of Gb and (like you I think) that is cached on on a slower mechanical disk, so maybe I need another larger SSD.

So the Resolve software is 'free' but seems quite expensive to run...

When looking for a GPU that is best for Resolve, it is a good thing to have a look at the Blackmagic Forum in the section on colour grading, you will find out what card has everyone excited at the time. Everyone was excited about the 1050 but I saw a very good bardain on the RX480. With regard to SSDs, I have the OS and applications on a fast SSD (Sandisk Extreme Pro) but I also render to a 512 GB SSD as well, because of the size of the intermediate files produced. I only use spinning drives to archive the material after I have edited it.

I like ProShow Gold, about $80 it has massive effects and is absolutely easy to use, even has the ability to build a show from your video with no input from you other than which video clips to include.  Comes with music selections that have copyrights.

On eBay for my second hand GTX 970 4Gb I paid only GBP 132 GBP, so only about $160

I've found that 16Gb Ram is working for me:

1. I've learned how to use the Optimised media feature of Resolve, so use half size optimised media when editing (and revert to the originals when rendering)

2. My paging file was too small, fixed at 1Gb. I've set it to be managed by Windows, and put it on a spare 60Gb SSD : )
