I have been getting some interesting results comparing the different file types on the Inspire 2. The 4k Prores Files are actually softer then the H.264 Files. Take a look at the photos and see for yourself.

Sure they are. ProRes is RAW, untouched Footage right from the Sensor. H.264 is already Post Processed. For RAW you have to Process the Footage yourself.

Pro res is compressed, not raw.  I don't understand why they would be softer than h264....are you sure you were focused properly?  That is my only thought.

I thought so at first also skyclip. I just added the 5.2K Prores 422HQ File to the photos above and it is just as sharp as the 5.2K raw picture. I think there is a downsampling issue here.

I was in focus. I dobule checked on multiple shots and has the same outcome. The h.264 footage was being recorded the Same Time the 5.2K Raw Frame was taken

Of course, to be annoying, I have to ask about how does the H265 compare?

I have not been able to compare H.265 because OS X doesn't support it yet natively.

after transcoding a couple of h265 clips (i too am on a mac) i just shoot h264,  the difference is negligible...especially when compared to dng

My results are as they should be... dng better than pro-res, pro-res (both flavors) better than h264

I think what you are seeing is a higher level of sharpening/aliasing. Our test show that h264 has increased sharpening even at the lowest settings, probably to counter the higher level of noise reduction that is part of the h264 encoding. You are not seeing additional detail in the h264-- but that detail is being emphasized with a sharpening algorithm.

Barry If that was the case the Raw Photo should be just as soft as the pores file right?

It is supported on OS X. its just that the processors on Mac currently don't have hardware decoding. You have to wait till the end of this year when the higher end Kaby Lake processors come online.

No. The raw file will have the most detail,. Note the aliasing along the high contrast edges in your h264 jpg... Especially the edge of the roof, and the diagonal siding lines in the left side. That isn't detail... It's sharpening. Now look at those same edges in raw... Note how the lack the aliasing, and probably have a tiny bit more actual detail. If you take the prores file into photoshop, and add .8-1.5 pixel radius unsharp mask, it will look similar to the h264.

ProRes from Inspire2 up to 4.0Gbps straight from the Camera , H.264 @ 100 Mbit compressed and pre-processed. So, if you want to call 4.0Gbps compressed .... :-)
