Getting one drone in the air is one thing. But having airspace in NY is really hard (for a bunch of drones). It would have to be some where upstate or long island.

Well there's one in Frisco, TX on 3/19/2017, which is only about 40 miles away.  I signed up and hope to get a spot.

Some more events will come, and you can keep an eye on our NPE website to check. Besides, searching for local DJI authorized store and trying on drones in the store would also be an option.

I have a DJI Mavic already. Actually have been loving the HELL out of it. I can't wait to see something open up closer to the tri state area.

NYC & Long Island surrounded by airports. JFK, LaGuardia, MacArthur and then there's Terterboro, NJ. Flying on the island of Manhattan must be tough. " Other rules in the FAA framework for small drones also make it hard to work in New York. A drone must keep 500 feet away from buildings, people or vehicles that are not part of the operation, and cannot fly above any people or buildings that have not provided permission."
