Hi,

Has anyone been able to playback the h265 video files on their computer?  I'm having trouble getting them to playback on the latest Premiere CC and VLC.  Any tips?

Thanks.

I struggled on Mac... eventually just transcoded them to h.264.

Reading around it seems h.264 is hardware accelerated on almost all computers now whereas h.265 is pretty bleeding edge.

Bump.. same here!  Just tried playing footage back on my Macbook (which I actually run windows on) and it's very jerky.. like it just can't handle it.  So basically pretty useless from what I can see unless maybe you hav a brand new pc/video card. ?

Wait till high performance Intel Kaby Lake processors become common at the end of the year. These have h.265 decoding wired up in them. Decoding is very compute intensive.

How large is the file size? If you have a drop box account and can share, I can see if I can open or view the files. I have been working with h265 video files for the last couple of years.

Best solution: transcode to ProRes or h.264. Latter if you are editing. Former for viewing.

Mac, for now is not ready for H265, put it on H264 and you are good to go

I believe that is reversed. ProRes is the preferred format to edit on a Mac. The downside is that the files are much bigger due to not being as compressed. H.264/H.265 are not optimal for editing but are fine for playback as long as you have the proper CODEC. A friend of mine recently bought a new Mac Pro and had stutters when editing 4K H.264 but smooth as silk when editing a ProRes file at the same resolution/FPS and higher bitrate.

If you are going to edit them on a Mac you should transcode to ProRes. If you just want to view them then you can download a 3rd party video player that supports H.265 and skip the transcoding all together.

Thanks for pointing out my goof! I've edited my original post.

Yeah - but as we've said elsewhere, wait till the end of the year when hardware enabled decoding becomes more common

If you're using a Mac and you shot your h.265 video in .mov format, simply rename the extension to .mp4.  Premiere Pro CC will then recognize it.  H.265 is not so user friendly in Premiere unless you have crazy specs... high end GPU, SSD, fast CPU and lots of memory... and with a Mac, specs aren't so crazy high unfortunately.  Shoot in ProRes 422 if you have the license and ability to do so and if you do, you'll need to correct the lens distortion in post since DJI didn't implement this correction in camera or prior to encoding.  Using a curvature setting of -7 should do the trick.

Thanks for the replies.  So basically the H265 footage needs to be transcoded before editing in Premiere.  But I'm hopeful premiere will have an update to play the clips natively.
